Any Canadians have iPhone experience on the new Telus and Bell HSPA network? I am thinking of ditching Rogers, but I think my biggest concern is the lack of an edge network as a backup with Telus and Bell.

    Any carrier switchers have comments?

I was also wondering if anyone can clear up whether Telus has got visual voicemail for the iPhone sorted yet?

I use Fido, they've been good. I had Telus (before my iPhone) for about 7 years for internet and mobile, and I would never, ever, ever give them money again. Worst telecom in Canada, in my opinion.

When I got my iPhone (it was a US iPhone that I had unlocked. This was before iPhones were released in Canada.) I called Rogers and I told the guy I wouldn't sign a contract, because I already owned my iPhone and didn't want to be locked in to a company I'd never used before. His response was to scream at me over the phone, "YOU HAVE TO SIGN A CONTRACT. YOU HAVE TO. WHY WON'T YOU LISTEN TO ME?" My response was "Listen, guy, I'm not even a customer of yours yet and you're already yelling at me! You're YELLING!" Mind you, I was laughing at his absurd rant, so that probably didn't help.

I hung up and called Fido. They were friendly, gave me a better deal, AND the guy gave me some tips on downloading firmware hacks to get around the pre-iPhone rules about accessing Fido's data network. I was shocked.

Long story short: Fido is cool. The only draw back is out in the country there's no reception, but I think that's the same on Rogers, and likey Telus and Bell's iPhone.

    • *psst* Fido IS Rogers and has been for years. Sorry.welded
    • Rogers owns Fido, but they're not the same company. Very different customer service.nb
    • Depends on who you ask. Rogers is pretty crap, yes, but all Telco customer service is a crap shoot.welded

Im on telus - no visual voicemail. Network is awesome EVERYWHERE except my fucking street for fucks fucking sake. I can use my phone like a ramp champ as long as I'm not at home, in which case i have to find a spot on the second floor by a window and hang upside down from a bar placed strategically so.

That being said i live in a forest surrounded by mountains and the pacific ocean just down the hill. :P

@nb - I have also heard good things about Fido's plans and service. However, even though owned by Rogers, from what I understand they don't have access to their full network, and its useless outside city centres. That's an issue as Rogers lack of representation in Atlantic Canada is a reason I am considering the switch and going to an even smaller network won't help.

@neferiu - Any issues at peak times with no fallback network (edge)? I am concerned that when its more congested in a couple years it will be a nightmare as more customers change from CDMA to 3G.

I took a look. Their 'Home Zones' are only Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. Not sure what the 'Away Zones' mean for charges. Also looking at their coverage map for 'Away' it looks just like the Roger's coverage map, so I assume they piggyback off of them.

    Maybe in several years...

    Anyone else?
    (Sorry for the obvious bump)
