I know there are some bike threads here.
and I want to start saying that I dont want a fix gear.
I just want a single gear bike to start commuting again from home to work and back.
    fast and light.
I have my eye on two models
this one I had (it was great) but they stole it :(

    http://www.freeborn.co.uk/_gfx/products/000855/detail/2010%20Langster.jpg

the guys at the bike shop told me they will hook me up cuz I got mine stolen... but Im pretty sire is gonna be only like a 20% off and when you add tax to that... well... it ends up being the same.

and then there's this one, cheaper, and good looking, but dont really know the bike.

    http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/mercier/images/ktp_2100.jpg

Im new to bikes so I dont really know much about them. I know I enjoyed my langster while it lasted. But I know there might be more options out there.
    help me out.
Spring is around the corner and I just got my tax return check ;)
    cheers.

any fixed gear can be made into a single speed for $20 in parts and labor. Langster's a little more relaxed geometry. Mercier is going to be a little bit sharper and "faster". Singlespeeds are simple enough that they're pretty hard to mess up so online places like bikesdirect are a fine place to go if you're looking for something cheep with two wheels

so you think mercier will be faster than the langster?
    but definitely heavier right?

    • I seen pictures of those U locks cut online ... dont you think the big chain is better?joseprieto1/5
I just read that, next bike will get GPS and a heavy lock

      Big chain, yes.
      Fuck D/U locks.
      detritus3/5
depends on what i'm doing/where i'm going. If I know I'm going to be leaving my bike out long, then chain all the wayduckseason4/5
otherwise its much less of a burden to carry a u-lockduckseason5/5

faster? no. faster is only how hard you pedal. i haven't researched, but i doubt the weight difference of these two bikes is different.

langster looks good. the mercer is a little classic looking as far as frame geometry and tube size. are they both steel?

if it was me, i'd take the langster.

    • faster meaning more aggressive geometryacescence1/7
      ?acescence2/7
Faster is not how hard you pedal. Geometry, and gear ratio play a large role. Mercier has aggresive geometry = Faster if equal weight.jacklalane3/7
      If both equal weight.jacklalane4/7
please, there's barely a difference in aggressiveness between the two...iCanHasQBN5/7
if u want the aggressiveness, flip the stem and raise the seatpost, which you can do with any road bike.iCanHasQBN6/7
Gear ratio > of course, but who keeps the stock gearing they get on a bike?iCanHasQBN7/7

I like the Mercer geometry better, but I've never ridden a fixed or single speed, hill climbs only here... do you want a cheaper bike or do you want a better one than you had before?

I think if you want a commute bike the specialized is better for you since the frame is much more easier on your back.. the Mercer comes with a more race style geometry... both are great though. I would go for the specialized...

I like Mercer's frame geometry better. Some minor swaps, like the stem, and it should look ace.

    • I pretty much repeated what everyone else said.

Why do you want a single gear bike? Are you trying to make riding more difficult? I thought you were new to bikes.

    • haha... Only someone who rides gears whould say that. There many great things about riding single gear... Low bike maintenance, easier ride (less time wasted churning though gears..necromation1/3
maintenance and smoother ride (less time wasted changing through gears), i could go on...necromation2/3
      I really don't know...I'm not a bike guy. I have found gears quite helpful.monospaced3/3

Go for an old schwinn and convert it to a one gear. Those prefab bikes blow.

I've fallen in love with my 70's Raleigh, converted to Single Speed.... find an old Reynolds 531 frame, find a smart mechanic, go to town.... just make sure the chainline is straight.... try a variety of bars and seats, they make a difference.

    • it's got a flip-flop hub... running fixed gear now, but flip it and it's single speed...vaxorcist
