Nah, whatever man. Sucks if it's just a blanket firing, but then again there's a fair chance all the teachers really are completely ineffective and all need to go. Besides, if people start praising any of those teachers they stand out even more for other schools to hire. Maybe... shrug

"The firings come over the district's concern that teachers refused to spend more time with students to improve test scores."

I love this type of drastic thinking; not enough people take risks and make decisions like this.
It always becomes about the jobs and maintaining status quo rather than long term results and the overall good of kids, teachers and parents!

it's a shame you can't fire the parents - as that is easily where the blame should reside...
... learning starts in the classroom - but doesn't understanding come from practice (aka - homework... studying... ... things parents are responsible and expected to 'administrate' so-to-speak)

it's your job to teach and make sure kids get an education and don't. If 80% of your class fails and is below an average level, YOU are the problem, and yes, you have to work extra.
If any of us say I know the client expects this presentation tomorrow and that we can lose the account, but I wont work extra hours and leave, we will be on the same boat...
- I like the idea, but this would mean no one would choose to work in areas with high poverty rates.lukus_W
- actually, there are real teachers out there who love their job and take it seriouslyOSFA
- oh-please, have you not seen the movie Dangerous Minds?? hahaaOSFA
- Michelle Pfeiffer was the exception - can't all be expected to live up to that very high standard.lukus_W

They should have fired the fucking students, that's where the problem is, those retarded little bastards
- GeorgesII0
it's never the parent's fault when kids don't want to do shit,
they always blame, video games, internet, drugs, now the teachers.
I'm with you pony, I wish we could fire the parents sometimes
- eieio0
Why not pay them more?

High poverty-rates generally correlate with low expectations and low educational performance.
Solve the economic problems - and it will be easier to solve the rest.

yes and schools get plenty of chances to improve test scores so it is not like this was done from one day to the next : the district will give parents a choice to pick a school if a school fails to meet test score standards , and in all likely most of those teachers will get approved transfers
the real question is what next, now you fired everyone who do you bring in

Let's cure cancer and AIDS too...
...sorry

this is a high school - most of these kids are close to being adults and they can't get their shit together? These teachers are so underpaid, work a full day, and are expected to spend MORE time?
The point is that grades don't lie, it's not like a teacher "gave" a kid a grade, that child "earned" that grade - just another example of a generation passing the blame, so when 80% of those kids end up unemployed and can't find a job who should we blame, the employers?

"At $53,473*, Rhode Island was ranked 9th in the nation for average teacher salaries in 2005..."

For homework, we should all re-watch series 4 of The Wire.

its kind of the reverse in terms of policing young poor people but equally redundant. They get less teachers and more cops. Neither solves the real issues they're struggling through. I think the school boards and government social programs need to get funded properly rather than dealing with it the way beurocrats like to deal with things... cuts and cops.

I see what you mean jersey, but a kid can't do good on a test or in school if he/she doesnt have a good foundation, guiding, discipline, etc...
