i learned the difference by reading a lot of Spider Robinson as a young lad. He was a big fan of Robert A. Heinlein, a true science fiction author, and talked about and the difference in a very self referential way in his books. sci-fi is a lot more fictional than science fiction...sci fi has the story about aliens invading and doing a bunch of crazy shit where as science fiction would handle the broader implications of alien contact or invasion in a realistic and psychological manner.
