Backpacks look terrible and you look like a total bellend when you get on a cramped bus and push it into people while you turn. Like that twat this morning

Messenger bags are easier to access while you're on-the-go. Beats the hell out of removing the backpack just to grab a piece of paper or something. Also, backpack shoulder straps can wrinkle nice clothes (suit jacket, for example) faster than a messenger bag.

Backpacks are for high school kids. Messenger bags are for hipsters and college douches. Briefcases are for adults. Get one with a strap. Your welcome. Just my view from the top.

Also how much stuff are you carrying? A nice-fitting backpack (i.e. secured relatively tight to the body) can work since you won't have the problem bigdog mentioned and it can work quite well with the right attire. It's much harder to pull off a good look though than with a messenger bag.

Backpacks are practical - but are probably not likely to be fashionable. I think they're the best if you're cycling from one place to another - like biggestdog said, they're bad for public transport.
Although I sound like a bit of an idiot saying it; messenger bags are very 90s. I think their time has come and gone.
If you want to be fashionable, I think you need either a briefcase, a satchel or a man-bag.

omg... vitamins.. its function over fashion... this isnt handbags where its fashion over function..
messengers, backpacks and the likes are made and designed well in the price range i assume you are looking within to be made really of either poly or nylons.. nothing overtly special.. nothing that will last..
the usage of what you need is strictly function.. so stop looking at fashion and go find the pack that works towards your needs..
or go for a fashion styled backpack/ messenger that has crappy hardware and and small compartments as fashion for that style bag is designed to be smaller..
use the bag for your needs not for your style.. its an accessory not an apparel..
