  May bee from Boston, but it's not a typical Bostonian accent. I think it depends on your peer group growing up. One tends to speak more like one's friends - I speak totally different than my brother and parents. They have a hint of a southern accent, and I have none.

  what gets on my nerves, some people say:

  Room= rum
  Roof = ruf
  Finance= f'nance
  program= progrum
  diabetes= diebetehs
  and anything with a "ing" that becomes a "ink"! Like:
  annoying=annoyink

  saying = sayink.

  there are 4 or 5 "Boston" accents, the city proper, north end / east boston / north shore, south boston / dorchester, south shore, etc.. they all have their root in the various immigrant groups that settled in each area, Italian, English, Irish, etc.. They're actually pretty distinct if you're familiar with them. The Italian / Boston accent is similar to the Italian / New York accent.

  • for example, compare that guy's accent with John Kerry's accent, they're different, but they're both "Boston" accents.– acescence
