I just tried to register and try it out ... after 5 minutes of wrestling with the buggy ass 're-enter password field' I gave up.

Played it since it came out of beta off and on.
It can suck your life away. very fun, lots of learning to do. Less role playing more actual just raw fun game play than some mmorpgs. If your rewarding yourself after a long project, or dont have much work - go for it. But otherwise, notice this could take 3 hours of your time a day and not be un-average.
MW2 may be a good alternative.
- great game tho, you wont be disappointed now that its been perfected over 5 - 7 years .Machuse

ive been in and out of this game since 2004. been doing a stretch over the holidays now again. very mature game with a lot more levels of exploration and learning to it than anything else.
The macroeconomy by itself is a good reason to pick it up.

They say "It's not a game, it's more like a shitty job"
And it's kinda true. I used to play it for a year, and yes, it's very mature, and very sandboxy. If you're looking for a game where you create your own content, and own challenges than it's the perfect game for you. But be prepaired that you'll have to work for it, sometimes really hard.
Some interesting facts for those who don't know anything about this game:
You fly spaceships.
If they blow you up, your ship is destroyed. Sounds trivial but in most mmorpgs, you'll never lose anything. If you die, you respawn somewhere else, go back to your death location, and start everything over. But in this game, you can actually lose your ship. Sometimes you work for a month for a shiny new ship, and you can lose it in no time. You can lose everything even if you haven't done any mistakes. Just like in the real world kids.
So if they blew your ship, you're in your pod. And you have a split second to escape, because they can actually kill your body by shooting your pod. Yes you have clones with all your memories (skill points), but if you forgot to update your clone, you can lose tons of progress you've done in the game. And clones cost money.
So there's a huge death penalty in the game, so be prepaired for big losses if you start to play this game seriously.
I said seriously because there're 'safe zones' in the game. They are safe but also boring. If you play only in these territories, you'll miss the most fun parts of the game, and also everyone will call you a pussy.
So in safe zones other players can't attack you. Ehrm... that's not true either. They can attack you anywhere (except space stations of course), but if they do it in safe zones, the 'cops' will come and blow them up too. But if they are fast enough they can blow your ship before the cops arrive.
Losing everything isn't true either, because you can pay insurance on you ships. But insurance costs money like in the real world, and you can only insure your ship but not the equipment, which sometimes can cost you much more than the actual ship.Ok, I stop now before it's getting too long, but what I wrote above may give new players a feel of what's going on in this game, and I hope I could highlight the fact that it's really not like a regural pink fluffy treehugging fantasy mmo.

sounds good actually, I hate games without consequences

I played it years ago, forgot to cancel my membership for a year and ended up paying a hundred pounds or so, stupidly. d'oh.
I didn't get into it then, because I was working too hard.
I'm not going to get into it now, because I need to work harder.
But this is the only current massively multiplayer game I've ever been truly interested by - some of the stories you read on geekier corners of the internet, about the Eve universe, are truly (in a Gibsonian meta future sense) quite amazing. Whole political systems consisting of thousands of players collapsing or cannibalising themselves, massive heists and corporate skullduggery... it all sounds like a lot of 'fun'.
But, like mikabast says, you need to put a lot of time in.

i played for 4 months. good fun in blowing people up, but i had to spend 3-4 hours doing repetitive missions or farming monsters for each hour i spent shooting at people. i quit when i realized that i was 'working' more than 'playing' EVE.
*of course, you can find ways to buy EVE extra currency using real money. but that's just hella stupid.

I really love the artwork for it.
