All these films like Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Battle Royale are potentially rip-offs / influential derivatives of "The Long Walk" by King (Richard Bachman)... One of his best books IMO. I believe Frank Darabont owns the rights, but that film would destroy peoples minds if they actually depicted the scenes correctly. Pretty hardcore, even in this desensitized media world.
One could even say that these films derived from earlier works - such as "Lord of the Flies."
I happen to dig Battle Royale (film) which came out in 2000. It was pretty epic as I recall - the 2nd one was crappy though.
The novel was completed in 96 according to wiki. - haven't read yet.
