Hey there, investigating setting up a touchscreen kiosk, where to start?

What kind of software, hardware set up do people have experience with and is this something that can be implemented with a bit of work or should it be left to specialists?

    Cheers in advance!

TUIO is a good start, can be used with many diff langs including AS (so you could do it yourself if you code AS) or for better performance on large (high res) surfaces c#, c++ (openframeworks) , java etc

When I built one a while ago using the rear diffused illumination method (because it was cheap and easy to get together) but I want to give it another go using DSI instead.

The NUI Group (http://www.nuigroup.com) wiki and forums were a great source of info on equipment, materials, build options, etc.

They've even got an e-book out now too which I had a quick skim of, and seems to have shitloads of great info:

Last one we designed and built used a 42" Samsung touchscreen, Dell computer inside and Flash interface (that was tied to the website, so we could update both). We designed a custom case and had it built by a craftsman/furniture builder - it is a free standing kiosk.

It was simply a website running locally and worked very well. Not cheap to get professional touchscreens at that size, but it worked very well.
It was also very easy to implement, overall.

for hardware, installation basically the same as setting up a pc

flash for software, basically the same as building a web site / application

a lot depends on what the terminal will have to do. only display? online connection? internal camera app? wifi? usbport for download?

That all assumes, of course, single touch systems. Multitouch requires more work and cost!

@ahli - I built a multitouch system for under £50 in 2 days (would've been 1 day if it weren't for the fact the webcam I used was shit for picking up infrared so I had to go and buy a cheaper one).

Good job Sir! some of the prices they charging for multitouch screens/overlays are crazy.ahli3/4
Yep, it started with me wanting one of them fancy Wacom touch screens, and being shocked at the price.rounce4/4

Cheers for the suggestions all, much to look up and figure out.

basically its going to be single touch, working from a flash movie, hooked up to a touchscreen. Although I first thought it'd be a custom kiosk thingy, I think its more likely to be desktop or countertop mounted.

    • Every approach has it's pros and cons, it's best to work out EXACTLY what you need it to do (ficidual marker tracking , etc) and work from thererounce
