any suggestions please.
I hear lacie aren't what they used to be, and WD getting bad reviews too or is this just a small percentage of users...
thanks in advance

i have lacie, and WD at home, both working good

I've gotten the lacie network space a while now, its ok but slow as its over ethernet, can connect it to a wifi hub though and connect wirelessly with computer or stream vids to a ps3. But if you're using it regularly for a big transfer of files then i'd go a different route.
Cheap and reliable, if you don't need firewire:

I have 2 WDs, using them as Time Machine drives. 6 months and both working fine (cross fingers, touch wood, etc).

Almost exactly as MrOneHundred, two 1TB WD MyBooks, one a year old and one 6 months, both work perfectly ... I think the WD issues were with the older model MyBooks.

I have the WD 2TB, it stores files.

Avoid a Raid 0. Get a Raid 1 and if you can't afford 1TB, then make the drive smaller, but more secure.

for working off or just backup/storage?
the cheap WD mybooks usb2/FW400 are fine for storage.
i split mine 500/backup and 500/itunes and it works great.
