Is there an easy way to animate this film strip in Flash, this actual shape of the film is fixed, I just need the pictures to move along it. Under 35k.
Have been playing around with bitmap displacement to curve the the images around the strip. It looks ok, but is difficult to work with, positioning and scale become problematic - which isn't ideal as it needs to be resized for other ad sizes...

Only way I can think of doing it is making a mask to only show photos within the frame, and sliding the photos left to right.

- I dunno.. if you do all three, at a glance it'll look pretty okProjectile

I'm trying to avoid that solution - it looks naff. but got a feeling it's the only way..
might try doing a 10 frame loop in AE and exporting it as a tiny flv see if i can get it under 35k, will look poo i imagine. If within a container movieclip i put an image and a displacement map and the code to create the displacement map from those two elements - if I then try to rotate or scale the container movieclip why does the stupid displacement effect not also transform? so annoying...

Try compressing the images with fireworks.

I've not tried it with such a subtle wave before but I've used Perlin Noice to displace a bitmap in a similar way and I used a gradient like a displacement map so I could control the distortion a little easier. Might work with a little messing around.

could this be done better in a 3D app? (perspective doesn't look convincing).

I'd do what ceiling cat said and not even bother with the rest, especially w/ only 35K. Displacement maps are a major pain in the ass to work with.
Mask it out using the filmstrip but as each image comes across the films curve, TILT and SKEW the image slightly.
I'd also play around with very subtle lighting effects near the curves, maybe like a very soft subtle gradient on each end of the curve and even from background to foreground, try using a blending mode for it too. This might help the illusion...

I dunno, I did a banner not so long ago using a gradient as a displacement map using Perlin effecting multiple images to look like they were blowing in the wind and the whole banner came out at 22k. Not saying to use it but it's worth a little look.

it's proving to be near impossible to create a gradient for the displacement map that will make the image distort to the shape of the filmstrip. going to have to use the naff options. perlin nosie effect combined with displacement map wouldn't create the right effect.
