Crazy Powerbook Behavior

My home computer is an old Powerbook g4. Its been really solid up until yesterday.
I turn it on, and it goes to a login with password screen. That login screen has never showed up, cause I never set up user accounts! WTF!
So, I boot from my install disk, and try to change the password for the admin, and (surprise surprise) it says 'no users available'. I tried repairing disk permissions and all that shit. No luck. I even tried reinstalling osx, and it gets almost all the way through the instillation process, and tells me 'installation failed, try again later'.
I have no idea whats going on. Could this just be a serious hardware problem? End of the line for the ol' pb? Anyone got any ideas?

word. Im in the market for a new comp anyway. If i take it into the mac store and get a new comp, you think theyll be able to migrate all my old data over?
- don't see why not. They can start it in disk mode or whatever it's called.dropdown

ok, had the same problem, here's the solution
1st - you need another mac to transfer your entire hdd via (i don't remember the term) but its with the firewire cable.
2nd - Initialize your disk and reinstall OSX
3rd - redo step one and transfer back your data done.- i haz no other mac. Again, think the genius bar would handle this for me?baseline_shift
