if you display colour number 734,746 and it's next to colour number 734,745 of the "millions of colours" that you wish to see - can you tell the freaking difference???!?
if you design for print, then you'll be use pantones etc - so it doesn't how it looks on screen, it's the print that's important. if you design for web, then most other people will be seeing it on crappy pc's and crappy monitors. so you don't need to worry. and the image will likely be compressed.
so unless you're doing scientific research into colours displayed on computer monitors - i fail to see why it's so important...
