Does anyone have any links to articles that explain why presentations (PowerPoint, for example) should be simplistic and not include whizzy graphics, sound effects and stupid animations?
We have a guy working here who criticises our PowerPoint template constantly saying that it is 'old fashioned and boring'. It is easy to read and reflects our brand which is all it needs to do.
How can I/we put this point across without sounding like we are having a go, because I'm seriously close to kicking this guys arse.

personally i don't see why you wouldn't have animations or effects. granted you can go overboard but there's no reason it shouldn't have some life about it. that's the difference between a presentation and simply sticking some posters on the wall.
my 2cents, i'm probably wrong.

If not, tell him to Fuck off and let you do your job

Well yeah, there is SOME animation, sentences or paragraphs 'appear' or the odd thing zooms in... it's not totally bland.

also, the 'easy to read' argument is moot to me. do tv adverts have particularly difficult to read text? generally speaking no. the key is to do what you want as far as animations / movement / colours / whatever but keep the communication clear and concise.

ANY animation makes me Gag.
I actually give the clients PDF's to present with

to the above 'why fix it if it aint broke' - sure. but to a point. if people stuck with that old chestnut too strictly we'd never change or do anything.
the argument goes both ways, it just comes down to the ability to know when enough is enough (usually 8).
this thread could easily have been started by the other guy telling us how the inhouse older dude can't move out of the comfort zone and change etc etc. then we'd all be jumping up and down about how some people just can't seem to evolve etc.
