I know that most people do not like Jakob Nielsen's design advice, but I am tasked with adding one of these menus to the retail site I manage.

What are the thoughts on these menus and do you have any really shitty or good examples of them?

uses two separate ones...

Not exactly the same concept but click 'Your Toolbox' on the upper right hand side.

I think Target has the best one so far....i like this article as well

I thought target was kind of overdoing it. Can you expound on what you liked? I am not disagreeing with you. I just want some more info...
- well i think i like target's approach since i am working on a massive dropdown as well.. i prefer how all the categories are displayed rather than the contents stair casing out/stepping outpixellette
- are expanded and not staircasing out. it is easier to use and makes more sense for the target audience that i am designing forpixellette
- since they are impatient :)pixellette

I am personally not a fan because it seems to me that more often than not, they only enable a poor information architecture. I am sure they do fine in usability tests though, so I guess if your users are happy...and your client is happy...
Ikea's mega-menu is done well, I think in part because it is a value-add and not a clumsy attempt to make up for a sloppy or ineffective IA.

We are actually going to be cross selling from our mega drop down.
So you have a product category and over on the side you will see that product category bundled with other products....
- that is so 2011stewart
- so when you rollover , product bundles will slide out from the side?pixellette
- No. you would have a drop down that would feature products on the left side of the drop down and across on the right side of the drop down we would test bundles and offers that include those products.tgqt
- right side we would test offers and bundles that are related to the top level nav term.tgqt

this is all good stuff...thanks so far.

this from the same asshole who claimed that menus should never be hidden

I think he touches on that in the article. The fact that it is a bit hypocritical and that he is changing his stance to accept the new mega drop down. I think his past opinion related to the differences in the drop downs performance [or lackthereof] across different browsers. The concept has become much more usable and now can be expanded.

well he's still an asshole. he he changed his "flash:99% bad" bs?

i find they work best if you add a half-second delay before they open, so mousing over them accidentally doesn't make them go crazy.

i dig this one because it's fixed and you can distinguish content from navigation.
