i would argue that the bronx are "real punk rock"

i prefer the originals like black flag, fugazi, sex pistols, dead kennedys, dead milkmen, face to face, helmet .... the obvious stuff for a guy in his late 20's to have grown up on.

the bronx are totally balls to the wall punk.
love their live shows.
saw them with riverboat gamblers in san francisco... it was pretty epic

what defines punk is a changing thing is all i guess.
my 'punk' stuff was dead kennedys (although they'd all but disbanded when i was listening to them in '89 on), ramones, fugazi, firehose/minutemen. i never liked sex pistols.
people seem to call green day punk (they're early stuff probably could be) yet it seems a little too polished and pop to be called punk to me and i actually like them.
now over produced stuff seems to be called punk.
one generations punk is the last generations trash.

I'm taking jevad's challenge, and I encourage you guys to do the same. I think it'll be interesting. I'm not going on what sounds like "punk rock," but more of what embodies the spirit of punk rock to me.
10 current bands that are still punk rock (in no particular order):
1.) The Lawrence Arms/The Falcon
2.) American Steel
3.) Bad Religion
4.) Bomb the Music Industry
5.) No Choice
6.) Defiance, Ohio
7.) A Wilhelm Scream
8.) Propagandhi
9.) Cobra Skulls
10.) I am going to get shit for it but despite some dubious career choices Rancid is still punk to me and I'm looking forward to their new record. Releasing 19 songs at once is punk rock.I know there are more I'm missing...

here's a hit-list of arse clowns that have use the term 'punk' as a descriptor. this here is why the term punk has been buggered for all time.
1: blink 182
2: sum 41
3: alkaline trio
4: bodyjar
5: fall out boy
6: less than jake
7: millencolin
8: simple plan
9: unwritten law
10: the veronicasseriously, does anyone think the species deserves to live on with this kind of evidence? bring on the meteor showers, we're done here.

i think these days you can't fully attribute punk rock to the sound anymore as no one will be able to capture the combined sound and ethos of black flag / minor threat. even bad religion, while they're still kicking and "punk" and all, have basically released the same album for the past ten years.
honestly i love punk rock but the bands who do the sound are all sounding stale. that new blake jawbreaker / cometbus band is pretty great. while they don't do the "strict" sound, silver mt zion has serious punk rock undertones and books only at independent venues/bars and just plays long tunes.
whatever. corporate music sucks.
