Another thing in the cadets that resonated with me whilst on infiltration training was that my officer describer our rifles as the 'thing most likely to get you killed in combat'.
If you have a gun visible you are the biggest threat to your enemy, and you become the top priority.
In non-warzones this is very much the same - A mugger with a gun is using his weapon to intimidate. The aim is not to kill you but to get your money. If you have a gun on you, the chances are you pulling for it will get you shot before you have a chance to for 'self-defence'.
If you have a gun pointed at you first, the chances of you being the hero are very low. Having a gun and not being trained for combat, and by that I mean under pressure (not shooting range stuff), is only going to lead to you dying quicker as well.
On a philosophical level, 'self-defence' guns also do not 'prevent death', they simply transfer it.
I'm trained to be very accurate with a rifle but have never been in a situation of pressure. I bet I'd be useless and probably incapable of cocking it if I was in that sort of a situation.
I'd be curious to see statistic around the gun-murder rate and whether the victims were armed or unarmed, or involved in criminal activity.

Another car used as a weapon
4 kids steal car, run down pedestrians. Cop shoots and Restrains offender. (This is probably another case where you'll accept the use of a gun, strange because no one will admit the car is a weapon, so why did the cop shoot at "transportation")

there is no difference if a life is lost from gunfire or a car directed at pedestrians.
they both result in death of the innocent from the irresponsible use of them.
the only thing anyone has to say about gun deaths is that they're so much higher in America. By your own rationale, if murder by car becomes more common, I presume then your reaction will be to ban these cars because of the media sensation surrounding it.
the problem is not the car, or the gun, or the knife, it's the person. Until that is addressed people will continue to kill using whatever is available,
banning guns is not the solution. education and compassion are.

These arguments about cars killing more than guns and how criminals don't follow laws so why have gun laws...it's astounding, and a little frightening, how myopic the lens is through which some of you see the world.
Even my friends who are pretty pro-gun see the need for tougher laws and for some reason are not insecure that these laws would part them from their guns. What a shame that people cannot seem to reason outside of the edges of polarized thought.

that same myopic lens is going both ways, I don't intend to ban cars, i only find it very selfish that if .014% of accidents are caused by irresponsible gun owners you shouldn't take away the rights of those who are responsible.
it's fairly short sighted to ignore another's death for your own benefit, but it's what this crowd does.

38,371 people died of drug-induced causes in 2007
good thing we made those drugs illegal
look at all those saved lives
-
Compared to other causes of preventable deaths, drug-induced causes exceeded the 31,224 deaths from injuries
due to firearms and the 23,199 alcohol-induced deaths recorded in 2007. In the same year, 34,598 deaths were
classified as suicides and 18,361 deaths as homicides.

"UN global arms treaty talks end without agreement
Some delegates accused the US of bowing to domestic pressure from the powerful gun lobby in the run up to presidential elections, our correspondent says.
On Thursday, a bipartisan group of 51 US senators threatened to oppose any agreement that infringed on the constitutional right to bear arms."
