I don't normally freelance but this sort of fell in my lap this morning:
Direct mail piece, in letter format as I understand. Client estimates 2-3 hour job, but we'll see. Existing logo, etc.
thanks in advance

2-3x your hourly rate, plus 20% for admin etc...
- i_monk0
How do you figure out your hourly rate?
- redant0
3 x $50 = $150. Think about the time it will take you and the amount you want.

its never a 2-3 hour job... keep that in mind
they have no clue what it takes

2 dollars
- doesnotexist0
either charge them $500 or by the hour.
- monospaced0
Clients don't make hour estimates. You do.
- "but we'll see"i_monk
- no.
you tell THEM how long it's going to take, and how much you're charging per hour...that's an estimate.monospaced

2-3 hr job. lol.
small agency charge around 150 bucks per hour. even with that price, that's a pretty cheap brochure.
- akrokdesign0
on the other hand, their budget (or what they think its valued) might only be 200. so its up to you.

I don't do any work whatsoever, unless it's pro bono, for less than my day rate. It keeps the stupid little piddly jobs off my desk. It also makes clients think twice about what they really need. If they balk at the cost, then they aren't the sort of people I'd want to work with anyway.
I say that now. Ask me in 6 months if I still don't have a job. ;)
- speakng of which... i've upped my cost to my day rate * the number of days I have spent on it. you now owe me $3000.skt
- also, your menu is in and working now. same link as before. i'm going to need content soon.skt
- Say what? I hope you're joking...Scotch_Roman
- I'm close to being done with the images, at any rate. Have to shoot 3 more projects, but those can be uploaded later.Scotch_Roman

No way it is 2-3 hours. Not a chance. Unless they have all of their assets ready to go, text is written and will need no revisions, they will take whatever you give them without design revisions.... Ever heard of a client that is capable of that? I sure have not.
- Estimate a two hour job, with $One Meeelyun Dollars for any revisions or copy edits.boobs
- akrokdesign0
don't forget, you need time after they approve the final version also.
finalize the file, find a printer, talk to the printer (not your HP), or email. send spec to printer. also, has the client approved the printing cost. etc.
- akrokdesign0
hold on, its a direct mail piece, that means the printer will send it out to the customer. or will they do it. or a mail center. etc.
