SF is a beautiful place to live, (and very expensive) ive lived there for about 20 years and am moving back sometime this year. working there though can be a little cut throat. Im not looking forward to going back to that. SF is very different than I remember it being 20 years ago pre-dot-com. a bunch of mamóns now, they say LA people are assholes? try hanging out in the business district in SF for a while, I've worked and lived in LA as well and found those people being more down to earth than a lot of the SF folks.
if you end up working in SF just look out for the people who aren't very good at their job, since they are the ones who will resort to other means other than the quality of their work to move up or just keep their job since there is a lot of good talent in that city.
since the economy is the way it is, i could only imagine how bad its gotten.

it depends on what you're into. lots of good restaurants and bars, but things shut down at 2am for the most part, so not much night life. lots of beautiful forest and coastline if you're the nature type. wine country nearby. mild weather that doesn't get too hot or cold, but hot weather and snow right around the corner if you want it. yes, it's expensive. rents are going down right now though, i just renegotiated my place for 300 bucks less on a lease i originally signed a year ago.

I lived in SF and the bay area for nearly 30 years, left 7 years ago. I liked it there (it's my hometown) and didn't want to leave. I still go back and visit family and every time I go I am able to see it more objectively. I miss it less and less and have been very happy I left. The San Francisco I loved is barely recognizable anymore.
Many people love it, but the payoff is not worth the price to me, and I don't just mean money, I mean the whole experience of living there. If you're set on the area, I'd recommend the east bay, or even further east or north, as long as you don't have to commute.
