horrible.
if they catch any of the arsonists it had better be jail for life.

very sad indeed...

Just watching this on the news, they were saying about how firefighters managed to get one fire under control, only for it to be deliberately re-lit by someone.
These arsonists are murderers.
- Nathan_Adams0
Unfortunately, arsonists that light fires that cause a loss of life can only face up to a maximum penalty of 25 years. (and only increased from 2 years to 15 years for not lethal fires in 2006).
Really, these morons should be treated with the same disdain as terrorists.

They are keeping the arson aspect pretty low-key at the moment, I guess they need to establish the death toll and also get the investigation underway without compromising the “presumption of innocence”. The PM is calling it mass murder.
Just terrible.

Yeah this is terribly terribly sad. The photos show how complete the destruction was, there's just nothing left of some of these places. When it makes it into the township and it starts hitting gas cylinders, there's not much hope. Poor bastards.

Hard to comprehend the ferocity of these fires and the devastation caused. People with well organised fire plans and years of experience stood no chance.
The best we can do is help out by donating cash.

Curious as to what sort of coverage this is getting in the US. I was watching the NBC Today Show from Sunday morning and it hardly rated a mention.

I've seen it all over the news here (US) today.

In Kinglake, where witnesses said most of the town was destroyed, one woman quoted by the Melbourne Age described the arrival of a badly burnt man and his daughter seeking shelter on a patch of open ground.
"He had skin hanging off him everywhere and his little girl was burnt, but not as badly as her dad, and he just came down and he said 'Look, I've lost my wife, I've lost my other kid, I just need you to save [my daughter],'" she said.

How awful.- My mind is just screaming at the attempt to process this. I can’t even comprehend.MrOneHundred

My brother in law in Kinglake said he was sitting there watching TV...absolutely no warning. He was alerted by a neighbour...they went outside to be confronted by the terrible noise of the fireball approaching. 29 now dead in his small town...just so random.
