Morning. I need to get a new hd and I thought it'd be handy to get one that Im able to access wirelessly. I've got a decent d-link router so not upgrading to an apple airport.
Looking at either this LaCie drive (but I've heard bad things about Lacie)
http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/158…Or looking to build my own with a NAS enclosure and a saumsung drive. http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/659…
Anyone have any experience with this kind of thing?

I just got an Apple Time Capsule 500GB. It cost £170 new on UK's Ebay (or £195 in Apple Store). Shame on me for not boosting local economy by getting it in Ireland, but it's like €300 (£270) here in Dublin..
Still waiting for a friend to ship it to me alongside some other stuff, so I haven't tested the speeds yet, but I don't expect it to be anywhere near hyperspeed wirelessly. I will use it via Ethernet mostly.
Something to have in mind: be sure to have wireless-N capability. However, your iPhone will slow down the network a bit as you need to set it to N, G-compatible anyway. Some historical reading:

Ah, good read ta muchly!
The time capsule looks good but its expensive for what is essentially a 500gb hd and Im not going to complain about not buying locally when the price is that much in the difference. I won't be automating backup or anything like that, its really just to replace my 250gig seagate drive which has be filled with music and photos and old work and is just for use at home, so I won't be pushing it in relation to loads of people working from it on heavy video projects.
I do have wireless N on the router and its a d-link too which is why Im thinking of going the 'build me own' route. I've just never tried to do it before and I know it'll be more awkward that just getting something plug and play but for about €170 I'll have a 1 TB drive that would be (hopefully) pretty decent.
- And yes I wrote the above 50% to up your guilt for not answering email, 30% to boast on my TC purchase, 20% cause..rafalski
- ..I like being a tech smartass sir!rafalski
- But hey, TC is a wifi-ethernet-usb router, it wouldn't make sense to pay this much for a drive alone.rafalski
- hehe noted, hangs head in shame. But I've already got a wireless router and don't want to get another one...ian
- so I thought a drive which i could hook up would be better. But if I needed both TC would deffo be a runner.ian
- I'll keep reporting how TC performs. Bear in mind drives usually have longer warranty bought alone (ie. 6 years) than...rafalski
- ..obtained as a packed drive. Also, some companies put cheaper consumer drives in enclosures which are less safe.rafalski
- If your 250gb has an enclosure, why not just replace the drive alone?rafalski
- Hmm, hadn't thought of that. But I still would like to access it without having to plug it into the laptop all the time.ian

We have a netgear NAS with seagate drives in work, and yeah they're great but expensive. I should say that Im looking to do this cheaply but with reliable components.

I like these:

Let me know what you decide on, and if it's any good, lol

Before buying something you plug in to your router's Ethernet, make sure you read the reviews. Some of the Ethernet-equipped enclosures turn out to be ridiculously slow.

Yeah raf, thats just occurred to me. Now I have to look at speeds and such like too. Dammit.

i would not go for it. tried a maxtor NAS one, oboy that was slow also it ended the connection while copying files. pretty annoying.
use firewire 800 instead.

On a similar topic, I want to RAID a couple of 1Tb FireWire drives. Is there a simple way of doing this and still being able to use Time Machine?
- ribit0
You mean to backup to the RAID volume? (Does Time Machine care if its RAID?)
- MrOneHundred0
Yes, a RAID volume. Not sure if Time Machine will “accept” having another utility’s formatting in between it and the volume. Also not sure what software to use to set up the RAID.

we have one of these at work. pretty slick:
