Where are the Printers? 3333 Responses

Where are the printers who care about design just as much as we (designers) do? I've been searching high and low for someone to print some business cards for my client and I keep finding these shitty 1990's looking websites. They are hardly confidence inspiring. Am I not looking in the right places? Anyone know of a good printer who does emboss/deboss/foil but has a site that is well designed?

Thanks for the response thus far. I living in Boulder, Colorado (USA) and I'm willing to print abroad if it means that I get a good printer. I checked out the YELP service and it yielded the same sorts of results that I've been finding. Where's the kick ass printer...? With the dope website and branding? All of these sites look like they were made in 1994. If it doesn't exist it might be a business opportunity.

What is your obsession with the printer having a kickass website? Some of the best printers I've worked with have janky sites. Don't judge a book by its cover.

Thanks showpony for throwing some good suggestions.
For an industry that services the design field there doesn't seem to be a single printer out there (that i've found at least) who puts any effort into the design of their branding/identity. Does this not bother you?
Love those hole in the wall printers with which I pass a file to and cross my fingers - I really hope it turns out exactly as I wanted!
(Thanks monospaced, janne76, and iCanhazQBN for the troll)

Thing is, a website won't really help that much. Any decent printer will send you samples of what they're capable of and will discuss your needs over the phone.

Why design?

they are printers. they understand print. got that?

they probably don't have fancy ids and websites because their business is printing, not impressing people with superficial nonsense. if some shit printer goes and pays saatchi a few million for an id, are they magically transformed into good printers?

i went to school with a bunch of print scientists..i can tell you..design is the LAST thing on their mind. they care bout ink consistency, paper grade, halftone dots, "hickeys" and what have you. who cares about their site.

hey this design is kind of OK for a printer..you have to use them!

What's your budget? I've gotten good results at Foils & Dies, Tewell Warren and Egan Printing (all in or close to downtown Denver). All have bad websites ;-)...although it looks like F&D at least are giving it a shot.

Funny how a user named BOOBs has given the most rational answer so far. ;)
