Always funny to see someone asking which camera to go for and the answer is something different.
D80 is better than XSi, but D80 is discontinued and replaced by D90.
It all depends on your use of this camera.I would go for a Canon camera rather than Nikon. Again it all depends on yr aim and budget of course.

Theyll both be fairly similar in features/quality, its more of a question between the two brands.
I use Canon, an old XT (2 gens before XSi) and find it great but can't give you advice on why not to go Nikon either..

thanks. ive been doing research on both camera's and both seem fairly similar. i just wanted to get a idea on how people feel about the two brands. so far, canon seems to be the majority.

i bought an xsi a few months back. I love it.

I have the D80 and really love it. I was flipping back and forth between Canon and Nikon, and went with Nikon because the price point was better for what I was after. But when I bought my D80 I don't think the XSi was on the market...but then again I'm not 100% sure about that.

Go buy both. Return the one you don't like. Futureshop has a really generous return policy right now because it is coming up to Christmas. you can return it in January for a full refund. The employees don't even care.... they call it a "rental".

i am currently living in the UK. i am planning on buying one when i go back to toronto for christmas. hopefully futureshop will have good boxing day prices.
D90 is nice, but i dont want to spend more then $1000 CDN. i think i am leaning towards the canon xsi.

I would probably get the xsi even though its too small for my hands and the D80 feels better because its a few years newer than the D80 and has some cool little features. If you could afford the D90 then I would get the D90. Then there is the canon 50D, I would probably get that over a D90.
Nikon have a few zooms that out shine Canons (mainly on the wide end), Canon have a few primes that out shine Nikons prime lens lineup. This is all in the high end pro range of lenses though.
Either brand will yield excellent results in the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, remember lighting is way more important than any Canon vs Nikon arguments.
- I do shoot a lot of Canon gear but have used the Nikon D300 and D3 and they are sexy time!slappy
