  I know basic ideas of css/html & using javascript to make page more dynamic. Looking to get into Ajax to make calls to Postgres (or Mysql).

  Best books to learn from? Best web sites to learn from? Best tutorial?

  When I needed to learn it for a project I got 'ajax in 24 hours' book...
  As the basic principles are really simple, and once you know them... (all about linking to one particular file, replacing content in divs really) ... you can then do what you like with the backend stuff
