I am just curious. I am starting to gather some illustrators, who I am all set with. And trying to pull together some writers, who I am still searching for to do a children's book. This is a personal project. I have never tried to do one of these before. But I'd love some advice from you the publishing experts about making a book for the first time.

you could always do a small limited edition run before trying to publish a massive amount. ie: 100-200 handbound/handmade books using available printing resources.
There's also a couple of places online that do perfect binding and what not, although I can't name them off the top of my head.

there are formulas for spine measurements based on the paper you're using. your printer should be providing it to you.

thanks for the responses. I am playing with doing a children's series of books. It's a pet project. Fantasy stuff. But I figured what the heck better to do a project that you'd love to do for yourself than for someone else. I'll have to look into making some connections in the publishing industry as well.
