The London Logo is a modern classic. Brilliant.
You'll see, I to have worked with the guidelines and its a great document. Really impressive bit of work.
- exactly, those who have seen the guidelines, all agreeBaskerviIle
- i've seen the guidlines. i saw the video. it's still shit.showpony
- interesting that the logo only works when/if you've seen the guidelines (which presumably tell you how to think). Says a lot....hans_glib

I've said from day 1 that the branding for the london olympics is more than just that logo, the energy and versatility of the brand will allow for a great campaign and support material. it should inspire rather than hinder designers, and you can see already how well it integrates with partner material. All you asshats moaning and completely focused on the logo should recognize your shortsightedness and lack of understanding as to how to make an extensible, flexible and campaignable brand.
It's always been disappointing how staid and conservative most of you designers are.
- and I'm still harping on about it.********
- tell me some more about the campaign and support materials, please********
- and I'm still harping on about it.

Regardless of logos, Rio would be a fun place to have the Olympics.

All of those logos are weak, including Chicago's. Doha and Praha? Those look like they could be for medical conferences or stationery companies.

Be a certain coup for Rio as Brasil has World Cup 2014.

Madrid, Chicago, Tokyo Rio. Delete the rest...

The Mexico 68 logo is also terrible; nobody should take pointers from it.

It's far easier to be a critic than do that kind of work. No matter what you do you can't create something that everyone likes. What you can do is do something that is of it's time fresh and different and not cliched. London achieved this in my opinion and none of the logos at the beginning of this thread have at all.

I actually really like, the london one in comparison to some of these other ones that are really stodgy. Note I hated it when it was released like many of you, and still feel like its not really the best mark I have ever seen. But theirs no denying that you hate it so much that it's got your attention. And it stands the hell out compared to the rest of those marks, everyone of them is trying too hard and they come off not so unique. I dunno, maybe it's growing on me. Chicago's is nice but it feels very hellenic and that's kinda hitting me over the head. Madrid feels like a peace core logo.

good comment from the site posted above
"I have to say I was as shocked as everybody when I first saw the logo. Being a British designer working in America, most people here didn’t know London had the 2012 Olympics, but they do now. The internet and news stations are full of the controversy surrounding the logo. There wasn’t this much coverage when London announced it had won the 2012 Olympics. Had the logo been very safe then most people around the world would still be non the wiser.I’m sure once the logo is applied to various applications people will grow to like it, maybe this was an amazing piece of brand strategy from Wolff Olins. Everybody around the world is talking about it and everybody now knows London has the 2012 Olympics! "

It was a poke in the eye the first time I saw the London 2012 ID, but it's also grown on me. It very versatile, vibrant and brash.
Sure as shit stands out. Bit of an assault on the senses. Almost punk like. Ugly, in yer face.
Says more about london than five coloured circles and upper case futura.
- I like punk. Maybe it's my day's screaming Oi and I didn't tip cars.. shut the fuck up :)Iggyboo

You can make a logo that's fresh and different and not clichéed, or you can do it right and make a logo that says "this is unmistakably the Olympics we're talking about here". London's is all personality but has no meaning - it could be 2014, 2006, it could spell out ARSE in that style and the meaning of the logo would be unchanged.
Where is the London-ness OR the Olympian spirit in that logo?
- It's in the Rings, which will also be splayed everywhere, as usual. I think that's kind of the point, no?Nairn
- what says london-ness to you then, a red bus, a cliche beefeater? I think it says alot about london, very clash, punky, londons calling type thingpeterorpete
- londons calling type feelpeterorpete

^ Monterrey's is the best in thread so far, but didn't they ban anything torch- or ring-like?
