i think it's pretty retarded, to be honest....
my wife is indian, and i recall her telling me that one of her cousins back in India was having a hard time getting married....as far as my wife was concerned, this particular girl was probably the prettiest of all her cousins by far, but because she had darker skin, it was difficult to get her 'arranged' so to speak....some family's wanted a huge amount of money just because of it....
If she were here, and free and clear from some of those influences, and was (like my wife) able to just date or meet any guy she wanted, she could probably have her pick of a ton of guys...but back home, thats just the way it is at the moment....
i think the term i hear a lot for the lighter skin tone is 'wheatish'....
lol
sweet jebus...I'll absolutely never ever understand this obsession with the whole dark vs. light thing..
pretty is pretty....period....whether you're as dark as night or 'wheatish'....

It's not strictly a race issue. Light and dark skin can be class markers too: dark skin means you work outside because you're poor, light skin means you're rich and stay inside all day. That's how it was in Europe for centuries. Now dark skin means you're healthy and active outdoors and white skin means you read too much Slashdot in your mom's basement.

Is there a translation to what he says at the beginning?
Interesting story, during an advertising class in school, we had a famous speaker, this advertising "guru" from India, he was based on the UK at the time, but he mentioned during class this award winner advertising he created for a pill that made a woman's menstrual cycle to happen sooner, that was because the Indian woman are not allowed to cook food during their menstruation - so the pill will be helpful if there was a weeding or something coming up and they needed to prepare food.So that talk opened a whole can of worms in class, every girl was outraged, they didn't understand why that was an issue. They guy just said, that's how it is in India.

It's not racist at all. All cultures have their 'ideal' of beauty, in india it is obviously having very pale skin.
All they're saying is that this product makes your skin paler, therefore you will conform better to the stereotypical idea of beauty.
It's no more racist than if it were reversed and showed some dude ignoring a girl with very pale skin, then noticed her after a spot of fake tan. It's an advert for cosmetics. That's all.
