    Hey everyone -
This project has been especially difficult. It's for a juvenile division of a judicial circuit.
I started out designing more of an official looking seal, and stylized elements, but the client wasn't responsive. They wanted a more kid friendly approach. Main objectives were to show justice, kids, family, community. They required using scales, family, and kid reaching for a star. I would love some input - still tweaking on the kerning and not totally jazzed w/ the 'family' i've drawn. Thanks for any comments you may have!

When I first glanced at the logo I saw two football helmets for some odd reason. I see exactly where the illo is going now, but first glance was kind of weird. I think your client is asking for way too much to be going on in a logo. This is like a diagram or something.

    • guess what I'm trying to say is try to simplify? easier said than done; based on your client's "wants" it's unpossible.Point5

tie more things together. It's busy. The "T" in seventeenth and the scale as one design element. Already looks like a T

    • what a horrendous idea!! sorry, but don't you think there's enough going on already without you picking out a completely unimportant / insignificant letter and highlighting it!?!?josimar1/2

Maybe "judicial circuit of" needs to be on one line.

The colors are great (almost a split complementary). I"m assuming that you're going to take care of the kerning (U<D in "JUDICIAL," e.g.). The concept is excellent in my view, with the following exceptions: it took me a little while (a bit too long in other words) to realize that those are hands on the scale. I also can't figure out what the child on the left is reaching for. Is that important? Finally, the text is really incongruous. I don't know if you'd want it all serifed, or that display handwritten font – it's just off.

You're off to a great start, though. It should look fine in B&W too, as far as I can tell.

From far away I see either easter eggs or eyeballs hanging....I agree there's way too much going on for a logo and think the colors are too contrasting (especially the orange and the dark blue which are complementary.)

i also think the text is competing with the graphic symbol should be smaller to maintain some sort of hierarchy. usually the symbol should be the larger element and the name remains smaller, with some exceptions.

    • in the version before this the scale pans and chains looked like a bikini top ha!bulletfactory

maybe just do the hands, similar but different than the allstate hands.

it should still hold some authority, I would say this doesn't have any authority in its imagery with the bright colors and child like rendering.

    • not that child like is bad, I just think it's not appropriatedoesnotexist1/2
i agree on the note about the colors - i like them, but i think zoo more than courtslorac772/2

2 elements I like a lot: the hands w/ figures in them, and the serif'd type lock-up. That said, yes, take a second pass on the letter-spacing. I don't like the rendering of the scales, and I really don't like the "juvenile division" type- it's almost unintentionally humorous, it's almost like why not just go ahead and horizontally reflect the "n," ugh. Colors are very Kwaanza, dunno man.

Hit this thing with the simplify tool, hard. It's gonna be good but you gotta work it.

Give them what they want (the crap you have above, sorry it is crap though) and then try to sell them on what they *need* - which is a simplified logo. Maybe one of those ideas(ie: the kid reaching for the star, the family, the scales) takes precedence over others?

    Criticisms:
    1) Scale: This thing will have to be an absolute monster to work at all - I can already tell that if it's gonna drop below a certain size the illustration & your tight kerning is all going to be lost. Simplifying the forms will help this.

    2) Consider the typography... the only reason this feels slightly 'official' or 'judicious' to me is because of the all-caps display serif(it looks like jenson or garamond to me). The script type below the name of the court doesn't gel with me at all, it works with the illustration but not the name of the court.. i think this is an issue of typographic proportion (the serif has classical proportions and the script has... well... not much going for it). I would try some sans serifs(even if you're client doesn't like them you can at least try to have fun with this piece) and maybe try alternating the colors/weights for emphasis.

    3) Not reading the hands that well in under the scales... or that they're even scales.

    and here's my subjective response:
And for some reason I highly doubt that the idea of ANY juvenile court ANYWHERE appeals to kids... If you can find one kid(who doesn't have a record) who gives a shit about the juvenile court I would be absolutely amazed. Consider the REAL demographic of this mark even if your client isn't.

    • great points - thanks!! two versions is the way to go - a version of what they want, and a version of what they need.bulletfactory

Also, if it's truly kids they're trying to reach with this you may want to play with the color more - kids always seem to respond to color before anything else.

looks pretty damn good considering the content. I'm not sold on the hands, I just clean up the fingers and/or just make a more basic shape.

I think that the kid's shoulders and arms in the second flower shouldn't coincide with your horizon line. I don't know much about logos, but this seems more like a crest than a logo.

    • And why crop their feet? People aren't going to be staring at this for hours.Redmond

If I may say... since I have already. If a kid goes into a juvenile detention center. I feel that he may come out a hardened criminal in less than two weeks if he has to look at the shitty type on the bottom of the logo. Also, if my color theory is off I am sorry, the color green and orange typically look shitty together.

    • yeah - i disliked the handwritten type on bottom - all type is going to be the same face.bulletfactory1/2

I updated the logo based on your suggestions (thank you for those) and played with colors - i started w/ primary and started shifting from there - the yellow was too bright, so i darkened it, and then shifted the others some. The client has been more responsive of this direction... If you guys have time, I'd love to get some critiques on v2... thanks!
