Thinking of buying a live aboard and living in a marina. I am finding lots of $3000 - $4000 priced ships on craigslist. Slip fees are much less than an apartments rent and I could sail every weekend.
Eventually I would sail around the world.

please don't buy a $3000 dollar sailboat and try to go around the world. You will end up costing us money when you need rescue. Also the adage "a boat is a hole in the water into which you throw money" is completely true. That being said... I've been spending the past couple months 'weekending' on a boat in SD. Lovin it so much, but the boat's a $300,000 sweet thang that I don't own...

check your wet dock fees, Ive been told they charge by the foot. I used to just dry dock our boat, used primarily for fishing.

thank you moldero....
ntslide - Your negativity is holding you back.
Anyone ever live on a boat?

An example of a boat for $2999.00 that would make a great apartment and an excellent weekend runabout. I would have several LA-Honalulu runs under my belt before I would have to upgrade. Maybe hug the coast down to baja.

I lived 3 years on a working ship. Loved every second of it. I do have a friend who lived on a little 30 foot cabin cruiser in Santa Monica... 700 a month for a waterfront bungalow.
I do encourage the spirit. it's the ocean though, many years and many amazing experiences (good and bad) have taught me to respect big blue. Just an ocean realist I suppose.

I am brainstorming right now, but I would eventually get around to the safety aspect.
$700 a month seems expensive to me. I am looking to leave NYC at some point in the next 5 years and move to a smaller market. SanDiego, Miami, somewhere with a more temperate climate...work for another five years while I hone my sailing skills and then quit life and become a sailor.

Was Blackbeard one of your ancestors?

No.
NYC is boring.
I bet Blackbeard had an interesting albeit NOT BORING AT ALL life.

having lived on the full gambit of sailboats and powerboats here is what I realistically recommend.
Sailboat 40' plus. The size if more of a safety thing than anything else, it makes a HUGE difference offshore and in distance you can cover. I love multi-masted sailboats as well, it's kindof like an emergency backup and stability in big air is unmatched.
Other than that... there is nothing like getting from point a to point b without a drop of gas... and if you're in San Diego or LA let me know and we'll do a QBN booze cruise.
sorry bout the music... fun stuff tho!
