    I know its server based (although I have never used it) but does it work if someone is working remotely and accessing the server? VPN server access, that sort of thing?

    I also have never used it as it was not very stable in CS2 on the PC but I think you can access it via VPN, but not sure.

    I'm asking because a colleague is going to be working from home soon (70/30-ish split) and we are exploring ways to ensure we don't file-clash etc...

    yes, have used version cue over VPN connection and it works fine

    Could always look into something like SVN/Git

    I worked at a place that used SVN for the designers, worked ok over the network dunno how well it would work remotely.
