I just got to ny last week, and I thought I would have more time to settle in, but the lady who i am staying with, is straight up weird. She tried to kick me out on the streets the second day I just arrived out to ny. "welcome to New York!" I guess.
Her assistant knocked some sense into her .. so I guess things are ok for now.
Im still adjusting to ny and , but I really need a job.. so I can leave this environment asap.
If anyone knows of someone hiring let me know!- Jul 20, 08, 7:36 a.m. – Permalink

How about just taking on a freelance project for starters? You can still be on the look for something more steady, while making some $$ to get you started.
I'd try contacting some agencies and hear if they have something, they need an extra pair of hands for.

yeah .. ill post the whole story.. since I'v been emailing my friends back in L.A..
so, I just got to new york, and I thought everything would be fine. The lady I am staying with is a nut case. I got back home around 6 and I saw her on the street, I said "Hi", and she flips out on me. She was like "I tried calling you, texing , left you a note".. and then she goes.. "you know what I cant take this , your too much of a responsibility, you need to leave". Here I am freaking out.. cause I don't really know anyone in ny and its my second day. I seriously started shaking and tried to calm her down to talk rationally. The reason for all of this was that I didn't see the note on the kitchen counter, cause I ran out in the morning. I had two job interviews that day both far apart at time and ran out of the house in the morning. I didn't get any missed calls because I was lost on the subway. Also I dont get texing, cause I'm just weird.
After the encounter,
I was completely packing to leave to catch the last bus upstate because its the only place I know someone at.
Then her assistant comes to calm me down and tell me its not my fault and she just didnt tell me the rules. What kind of person doesnt lay out the rules of the house from the moment someone enters their place.
Pretty much the whole deal is would of got a place to stay as long as I helped out a bit, like w. her dogs. But how could of I have known that if I never knew she communicates by leaving notes in the kitchen

it will be hard a hell to dig in and stay in NYC. you will be thinking about returning to where you came from many time over, but if you can hang in there you will see how amazing the city is and how there are as many crazy people here as there are opportunities. eventually, you will be able to navigate the maze of crazy people and take advantage of the opportunities... good luck, and start signing up for temp agencies that deal with designers (TTS Personel, update graphics, access staffing) you should also look into moving to brooklyn, there are cheaper places to live and most of the designers live here...

I would also bump this thread tomorrow where more NY eyes can see it, as oppose to on the weekend. Good luck.

Hey, I've been here for about a year and a half now... I like your work. I just got back from Paris/Milano and I was laid off a few days before my travels... so I guess you can say I have a lot of time on my hands. Let me know if you want to grab an ice coffee or something, the city is F#^%* hot. Send me an email: marchelovera (at) gmail (dot) com Good Luck.

I moved from LA to NYC a couple years ago, and also with no job lined up. Thankfully, I found it easy to get in the freelance pool, but even then, paychecks take about a month to start rolling in. You should try to find an apartment asap though. Even if you do not currently have steady income, you can make a strong argument by showing last years income tax report, good credit check, and current bank statements (assuming you have a healthy amount saved). Finding someone who already has a place and needs a roommate via craigslist might be your best bet.
As for the people and the amount of shit luck you are going to go through in the first couple months, get used to it. It took me a little under a year to completely adapt to all those finer characteristics of this city, but once you do, it's a great place. Hang in there. Give it time.
I'm also available to meet for a coffee etc. and live in brooklyn/boerum hill near flatbush.

I'll be a resident there, with a job lined up, by September. I'd love to grab coffee too as I don't really know anyone in New York.
