Apparently, if you are designing a website for a major news agency, you are not allowed to put the olympic logo ( rings) or the beijing logo anywhere on the page.
Yeah I know they're copyrighted, I just though they would allow it in this type of situation....it's the damn news.

I don't think they can stop you. It for editorial work, therefore copyright doesn't apply. But it would have to be in context... like on a poster or a flag blowing, it'd be unwise to use the vector artwork as they could ask you who supplied it.
Same thing if the news uses a crowd scene, they don't need to go and get everyones permission in the crowd to show them on TV.

No, I vectorized the rings and Beijing logo and put them in the banner. I saw it done on this site and figured it was ok: http://www.cbc.ca/olympics/
I wasn't even allowed to hand draw "Beijing 2008" with brush and ink, cause they were affraid of getting sued.
