I hear that internally every day, but posed as a question... most times it's hard to actually disagree...

Yup, and they almost always just mean...clean, good white space, not over cluttered and over the top...but it's easier for them to say "make it look like Apple"...or "...BMW". I actually like when I client says this because usually, it seems, like clients want to cram in as much info as they can to something and it ends up being over the top and too much going on.

Had a client that said 'make it look Maccy'...
Low-hanging fruit when they say that...lots of white space, few subtle gradients, couple of shiny surfaces and blobs and they love it.
Take the money and smile, it's only work.
Sweat and swear and curse and fret over personal stuff and learning.

You have to remind clients sometimes that at the end of the day they hired you to do something because they could not do it themselves. A good client can strike a balance between letting you do what you are good at and having some of thier own influence in the work. A bad client pays you then wants to creative vicariously through you. Usually its some retarded IMM or Brand Manager with no creative background but landed the job because he looked the part.

I love my creative director.. One time some idiot said that to us in a meeting "look at the iPod packaging" and her answer was "Apple is Apple, everyone knows what Apple is, you don't need a lot of information for someone to know what an iPod is"
In your face!!!!! This person looked like Adam on Mother's Day!

it's a great starting point... I always push my clients to name some brands that encompass what they want to exude... there's always room to make something your own within these parameters...

Apple brought a sense of design to the masses.
Packing electronics on neat box that ( used on the perfume industry before) is a HUGE hit, today people that have nothing to do with design buy apple laptops just to project an image, just like people do with clothes.Apple got a great reputation because of this, and people that have no clue about design, list apple as their only source of reference.

Microsoft is used by a lot more people yes, but they have ZERO credibility when it comes to design, and some long time windows users just bought a mac 3, 4 years ago, just so they can't point a finger and say:
yeah microsoft is the worst when it comes to design. "they" don't get "us"
