typography jokes are brilliant, and the people that use them are amazing, interesting people.

I always find it funny how when you look at the names of students attending places like the RCA, St. Martin's, etc... they're never British.

- wow, they actually chose to pay for both? can I have them too?kelpie
- Well, the critique group was wary of $1,300 for typefaces; $400 made more sense to them.gramme
- ...Then when I presented the final logo, they jumped for Mercury since it's a one-time cost.gramme
- Needless to say, I was stunned.gramme

to be fair on your church, they made the right choice - Mercury looks more, um, er, "friendly"?

Kelpie—what was the reason you came across for Mercury's lack of OSF?
- kelpie0
they think OSF look pretentious in a modern journalistic setting, so instead they design the figures smaller than the cap height and proportionally narrow so they fit in the flow of column text better
- kelpie0
and in there words:
"Compact FiguresIn traditional book typography, old-style figures are encouraged as the standard accompaniment for upper- and lowercase text. But in a modern journalistic setting, old-style figures look pretentious. For Mercury, we’ve drawn the more conventional lining figures, but provided them at a reduced size that’s more visually sympathetic with the lowercase."

Excellent, I feel better about the face as a whole having read that. Thanks for the info! :D
