Broadcast Design Rant

I have been doing motion graphics for 10 years now and I have to admit that the quality and craft of broadcast design is at an all-time high right now. Even though I have heard whispers of an industry collapse I'm not completely sure it has merit. There is only so much quality and detail that an amateur can accomplish without working with a team of artists... and everywhere I look the quality and execution of 3d has gotten exceptionally better. I don't want to sound like a cheerleader but there is some good stuff out there, 3d especially.
As you were.

Did anyone get the Accept and Proceed Newsletter with beautiful TV's A+P?

Thats true the 3d software got better but that just gives artists time to do more things...
Tools get better but the ideas and implementation have been better too.
It's not like the computers are on auto-pilot.... yet.

I think 'broadcast' is gonna collapse in the conventional sense. Much of moving image content is being viewed on the web so there are many more avenues for content.
Conventional on-screen presentations etc. will probably be under threat as people won't always adhere to schedules or even channel hopping but more media hopping.

I couldn't agree more. There is some truly amazing stuff going on.

There's even a nice fella out there pimping out logos for us!! (broadcast-style):

this is not user-friendly.

i agree that the work being produced is some of the best i've seen (in any medi). the industry is not headed for a collapse - but broadcast is definitely in a bubble and as tv loses prominence, the industry will contract a bit.

this is more of a rave than rant. carry on.

Random thoughts....
I agree with you about the quality level of alot of the work. I mean I am totally blown away by even the simple euro-cup stats boards, or a baseball game in HD, the lower thirds look amazing - albeit plain.
The demand for quality HD programming is going to explode. And with the perfecting of chroma keying, where it's at right now, it's just insane what people are doing.
I just have to complain that while all of the mo-graf houses with sick demo reels are insanely talented, and infinitely more talented than I - they all look basically the same. It's almost templated!!!

Also I was thinking that maybe the web 2.0/aqua/reflective trend is graphic design's way of covering the explosion in 3d.

hey all look basically the same. It's almost templated!!!
-----I agree, the slickness turns to sickness (not in the cool sense of the word). Becomes like a vacuum other designers wanking over a use of a cinema 4d plugin whilst the world at large just sees it as junk...Ideas are still king. Most demo reels are completely devoid of them.

It all pretty much looks the same to me. Everyones good at software, but the "industry" could use a dose of artistry. I speak in generalizations of course.
