i dont know but i dig that screen effect.

Hmm... I'm not sure what you mean beyond altering the _alpha and _y properties. The pattern over the image hides a lot of the jumpiness that flash can sometimes show with slow transitions. (just my guess) You are right... it does look smooth... like most of their work.

The grid also hides artefacts on the video and I guess that means you can get away with lower quality full-screen pics. Clever stuff.

Just for the record it's not full screen. It probably is if your monitor is small.

the animation would all be scripted which is a huge improvement on tweened animation.

i bet it's a smaller image stretched. As someone else said, the grid hides the loss in quality.
As for that effect I would experiment with the
TweenFilterLite class myself.

don't discount timeline tweens.
- please discount timeline tweens. you will never achieve as smooth a transition with them.skelly_b
- well, timeline tweens are not as versatile as code but you could achieve this g94 effect with them.cramdesign
- disagree with both of you. Timelined animation is just as good or better than code, if done correctly.fyoucher1

id say a pretty high frame rate and yeah like the others said the pattern hides the jumps when you animate bitmaps slowly like that.

It can be timelined tweens or scripted. The alpha fade isn't smooth, the slide is. They increment the Y pos exactly one pixel every frame to achieve the effect. The other is just a simple alpha fade in.
If you're a great animator, timelined animation can be a lot more advanced than scripted animation. Scripted animation is good for slides, fades, or other things like duplicating stuff. Just like how expressions are with AE. If you're more of a developer, stick with using scripted animation.

use a mixture of the two

They do use a few classical animation tricks that cheat the eye and add dynamic to most of their trademark interface tweens.
