I'm a good designer. You know how I became one? I was born with the ability. I know what looks good and what doesn't look good. This cannot be taught. Thoughts?

    to black and white.
good & not good in our job is often a mix between taste,
rules and topic. it tends do very subjective, just ask
    rybo, our rockstar designer.

There was a discussion about this in another thread. My proposition is that designers like to think they are "born creative", and perhaps some have an edge. But personally, anyone can learn design, and anyone can learn art and be good. I do wonder if you are trained to be an artist/designer if your stuff would come off mechanical though. Like anyone could dress in designer clothes if they had the money, but that doesn't give them class or style.

    • what whatLlyod1/3
you can learn creativity??? Sorry, some people are inherently more creative than others.Antonelli2/3
True. But I don't think that means someone couldn't go to school and learn to be a good designer.designbot3/3

principles and techniques can be taught - divine proportions, grids, texture, rhythm, repetition, color, line, etc - using them effectively is a different story. There is something more to it than just 'knowing' what looks good to be a good designer. imo - explaining why it looks good makes you a good designer.

I'm self taught. I've made it completely on my own talent.

    • Just cause you bought the "Photoshop classroom in a book"... book doesn't mean you're a designer.somatica1/2
you have so much more to learn then (this is a good thing).ribit2/2

design isn't a creative thing. i hate people referring to 'creatives' when they're usually designers, like 90% of design is not creative.

design talent is pretty much an innate ability and some skills can be taught to improve those abilities. But little black glasses and turtleneck sweaters need to be purchased.

I think you have it backwards. Knowing "what looks good and what doesn't look good" can be learned.

The ability to come up with original ideas and make stuff look good is the part you are born with.

A lot of it can be taught... Our teachers in our Industrial Design course told us (something like) that they couldn't teach us basic creativity, but they could certainly teach us skills, strategy, how to draw, how to develop form, hone our critical eye, teach us how to discuss design, design history and how to learn from it, stuff like that...

    • but really one of the main things we got out of it was a sense that we had to save the world from bad design... like it was a calling...ribit1/2

Having a gold membership card at Template Monster doesn't qualify you as a designer.

I know someone with a masters degree in a well known art school and her designs are terrible.
