We're doing a joint project with students from Zayed University and I need your opinion on what you think about Muslims. It's a cultural design project where we reach out to people who may not be aware of the culture. I need to know HONEST impressions that you may have as an outsider.

    It can be about ANYTHING.
For example, people think men with turbans are terrorist which is obviously stupid. but I need to know any misconceptions that you guys may have had like that.

Based on the mainstream news, I am led to think that Muslims are nothing more than pork-hating radicals with nothing more in mind than to establish a worldwide caliphate.

But Muslims are almost all peace loving people in my opinion, just like the other billions of people of this world. Some people let a bad egg spoil the other eleven, I try not to.

Just normal people. Islam is much like Christianity and Catholicism only Muslims don't eat pork, don't drink and don't believe that Jesus is God's son. They do beleive in Jesus, however. Also believe in Mohamad, Moses, Noah etc., and worship the same God as Christians and Catholics.
And like Christians and Catholics, some are misguided and fanatical, but the majority are avergae Joe's.

Pretty different than Christianity if you know that believing in Jesus is God's son is the everything is Christianity.SoulFly2/2

My old school got turned into a mosque a couple of years ago. When a friend and I went to look at the building I got arrested for walking on private property and was told all whites are forbidden to walk on their land.

    Nice.

its weird but I remember walking in Outremont (montreal) one day and an old jewish lady looked at me and asked me what I Was doing in "their" zone,
I told her to fuck off and continued undisturbed,
I also went eating in a mosque some years ago with my "asian" friends, they let us in without asking us what we were doing there, because we explained our curiosity about the whole muslim fuss, we got to eat with the imam and I actually was stoned by how open he was about my preoccupation with the muslim people.
I won't even start on how so called christian look at me and my wife when we enter a church here in italy,

religious people are overprotective of their churches, mosque, sinagogue, etc
after years of demonizing an entire group because of their choice of religion, people start acting like that, trying going back there and asking to talk to the imam and express yourself,
I doubt they'll trow you out

I had a few muslim friends back when I was in high school. I don't have anything bad to say about them that I wouldn't say about anyone else. This bullshit we've got going on in the middle east hasn't created a negative view about muslims at all. I remember getting some stupid, slanderous, forwarded email about Obama last week; in this email there were numerous mentions of some of his relatives being muslim (obviously to create some fear in the masses who have been brainwashed) and at one point I think the phrase "muslim extremist" was used. At that point I confronted the person at work that forwarded that bullshit and asked them what the difference was between a muslim extremist and and a christian extremist or any extremist for that matter. That person went on to tell me that they didn't even read the email but just forwarded it when they saw it in their inbox. It's that type of brainless sheep-like activity that keeps the fuckheads and their messages alive.

ive come across muslims in my travels to muslim countries and have loved their hospitality and how kind and generous they are. the real true muslims ive met in indonesia is an example to us all. they voiced their frustrations on the radicals and how they must be changing peoples perspectives on how they think of them..

but on the other hand, the huge influx of muslims moving to britain just hasnt helped.. britain seems to be a huge multi-cultural place where many foreigners seem unwilling to adapt to the british way of life, they wont learn english, speak to us, eat out food enjoy the same things as us and only seem too happy to take our tax money and other benefits. ive come across muslims who seem disgusted with what they have to see and live within because it doesnt tie in with their own culture. both our culture and theirs are incredibly different so they clash..

so i dont have anything against muslims for BEING muslims, i hate their unwillingness to adapt to their country of residence and accept that we live they way we do. i mean, my tax money goes towards helping these people out for fucks sake the least they can do is show us some respect!

    • +1drgs1/3
i don't think unwillingness to adapt is because they're muslims. more like they aren't willing to adapt for fearing losing their cultural heritage, especially for the younger generations. and please don't mix culture and religion, it's not always one part of the other.dijitaq2/3
The "us" you are talking about is them too. Co-existing means it's just as "fair" for you to learn their language. You being there first means squat.cannonball3/3

    ^^ (forbes comment)
that opinion there is the start of a form of racism.
you justify being annoyed with them and generalizing a lot.

why do people expect immigrants to automatically be swallowed up into your own culture. They have their own. The melting pot theory of immigration is just totally wrong.

I'm gonna use for example what I know the most : Canadian multiculturalism. I'm not saying its perfect. But the government's (well the previous governments) approached these issues and seeing them as a mosaic of cultures. Where collaboration and participation amongst the community is encouraged. There is a street in Vancouver (can't remember the name) where you can find a Synagog, a Mosque and Catholic Church one next to the other. Sharing space and understand each others differences to work together for the community. Not one giant culture where everybody must be brewed into and fit into a specific pre-set values and qualities.

Besides, isn't that the general goal of religion? Community?

fanco, alot of us british people are actually more than willing to live side by side with people from all walks of life and different cultures. most of us understand the differences, i mean, we're used to it, people have been flooding into the uk for decades now. what i wanted to emphasise was the fact that many of the people who come to live in the uk (ie muslims) are not willing to accept us and the way we live. it is not US that need to accept and respect their cultural differences, we already do.

as for the comment on me becoming racist I vehemently disagree with that, its a case of 'why should we show respect for those who obviously have no respect for us?'

    • turn the cheek. show respect no matter what. in the long run you will be the better man if that is the case

To be honest, I've never really met any (let alone got to know any), but I'm surrounded by many.

My only nit-pick with the Muslim community here in the UK is a distinct lack of anyone stepping up to the box to reassure (educate) us about the intention of their religion. They're being given a bad name and no one seems to care.

    • I agree, why dont they protest against their own who are doing wrong.Kiko

most of the muslims (who are from Somalia) don't like or are afraid of dogs - depending on their size. That would be the size of the dog, not the size of the muslim.

They will cross the street to avoid my dog when I am walking her. Or really any dog bigger than 20 pounds. And the children are fascinated by dogs and they have no idea how to act around them.

That's the extent of my knowledge/opinion on the matter.

I think (well certainly in this country, UK) there is a lack of communication between community leaders, local governments etc, about each others cultures, which leads to a lot of misunderstanding and misconception, for example...

A close friend's brother is in the RAF, and stationed at a barrocks in a multi-cultural part of Peterborough, anyway, it was agreed by the local council and the RAF Commander, that they wouldn't fly the Union Jack and also refrain from wearing service uniforms outside of the barrocks, the reason being because it might offend the local ethnic minorities, or cause potential hostility and even violence (because of Afghanistan, Iraq etc).

Apparently the general consensus amongst the 'minorities' was that (a) nobody had been informed of what the council/RAF were planning to implement (b) nor did they have an issue with it, it was the local council treading on egg shells doing what they thought was right, to avoid what they assumed might create some sort of backlash without creating a dialogue with the right people first! and it's because of that sort of shit, that we have the BNP wining local elections (which is a fookin scary thought!)
