info needed for a grant proposal
- madirish0
i would have to guess there is upwards of 200 hours to get the thing to press, no?
maybe the $17500- 24000 range?

20-25K outside of production costs.

that much, huh?

Is this a US job?
Who or what market/region is it for?
Are the bulk of pages dropping images on a grid after the design is set up (as with many catalogues)?

it's more of a high end art monograph sort of thing-- U.S.-- to accompany an exhibition

i would also say 20-25k for design fee. i think that should be a good comfort zone. if you can whip it out real quick and go really aggressive, then 15-20k.

depends on how much filled in type you have to make...
- letters20
I would say you're in the 12–18k range if its regional–national work and is soup to nuts, all content provided, no extensive retouching or image handling, encompassing the print coordination.
Maybe in the 20+k range if its national–multi-national work.
I think where in the range will depend on how much time you spec into your process, rounds of revisions, etc.
- what are you suggesting for an hourly rate (for estimate sake) then? seems very low IMO...madirish

i wish i got paid half the amount some of you suggest for projects on here
- letters20
Haha – I'm usually the one with the high numbers around here! I was assuming a single individual at an estimated 100/hour for 3–4 weeks of work for a smaller (regional) client. But honestly, I was lowballing it cause I'm usually told I'm high!
I'd have a bottom of 20k personally

And and to note, my estimate is for the work (1 person with basic freelance overhead), it is pre-profit. You need to add your own profit margin based on your business practice!

I think these figures will seem high to arts organization people... it's not for a drug company or large corporate entity
- but it is a large museum/space, no?madirish
- go for swag and other benefits to round off your fee. maybe build in another project, like notecards loved by giftstores********
- no it's a college friend diploma exhibition! ;)rafalski
- the price may seem high to the organization people, but they're asking for a large amount of work. 80 - 100 pages with unique fold outs, pop-ups, "design experimentation", etc. That shit aint cheep.sintaxera
- popups, fold-outs ,etc. That kind of stuff takes talent, is time consuming, and never cheap.sintaxera
- but I agree that they may balk at that price. they may need to rethink what they want.sintaxera
- maybe you could ask artist for a work to cover difference? A small cut-out would be nice.********

I don't even know where the exhibition would take place; they are seeking funding from the exhibitions initiative of an arts foundation

If you feel they are going to get sticker shock, perhaps break down the costs in sections based on all the work you have to do.
Or perhaps like take the cost down but you get first dibs on any piece of art for free.

Nothing less then 12K and that is low balling it...

>> i wish i got paid half the amount some of you suggest for projects on here <<
i recently read an article where they said you are charging too little if the client doesnt look like you punched them in the balls after you tell them your estimate
