design portals dying? why?

just noticed another design portal, lounge72 (http://www.lounge72.com) is closed now. The comment on the PBS remarks about first Pixelsurgeon closing down too.
Curious? why is this happening? is it just the usual turnover, maintainers moving on to other things etc...? or is it something larger like the impact of the massive / major social networks like facebook overtaking more 'niche' portals ........or that there's too many blogs, too many sources of links and discussion on things like delicious and..well, just all the blogs out there...
I don't expect NT, uhh, I mean, QBN to go that way anytime soon...seems quite stable....userbase, new site and all .... but some of those other longtime portals........kaput.....
...surprised K10K has stuck around out of all of them....
DiK is in transition I see now too...Maybe what it is,... is that the old sites, their maintainers and regular posters etc.... are reaching a threshold, where they must decide if they want to redesign to bring their 'portal' up to more social networking/bookmarking/community standards of interaction, design, etc ...... or risk basically dying a slow death....
random thoughts for the day anyways....
Long live the design portals

QBN PWNZ them all. Possibly.

I think I used to like NT first, then PixelSurgeon, then Design Is Kinky, and then the others (like k10k, Lounge72, Australian inFront, etc.).
Now it's basically just QBN.
- go AusINFRONT!forcetwelve
- DiK needed an overhaul for waaaaaaaay too long...kalkal

protein os just came back online after an extended absence, shame the type renders horribly on my computers... anyone else noticed this?
- Jaline0
I'm still waiting for the Protein store to re-open. They had some great stuff up in there.
http://proteinos.com/ is the link referenced above, if anyone is curious.

they're going away because they weren't making enough money to make the work involved worthwhile

so does the type look bad on your screen J ?
- The type looks okay. I think it's the images, as kalkal mentioned below.Jaline
- funny, images don't look too bad to me but the smoothing on the type looks terrible...

The type looks fine here.. a lot of the images are obviously scaled in the browser though.

I never even bothered going to those sites.

I used to go to Newstoday but they're gone now. Now I just hang here.

Perhaps the format is considered outdated...rather than cram a lot of content into tiny boxes with 45 degree arrows and "pixel" fonts, the new consensus seems to be the rise of the simpler blog format. With larger screens and shorter attention spans, users don't mind scrolling so much, and studies indicate they are more likely to enjoy 11px Arial than 10px Verdana.
Welcome to Web 3.0.

- I actually like Arial more than Verdana, but not the larger sizes. More like 10px and 11pxJaline
- Wait, so you think Web 2.0 == 45 degree arrows and pixel fonts? That was so 1998, Web 1.0 mayne.NONEIS

Funny - after reading these posts, I just stumbled across this. At least these guys are looking for submissions!

I think people are too busy, the guys behind the portals are all doing their own thing, Arber's Wyld Stallions for one.

It's the next step toward abolishing design completely... which is ok with me...

It's just not as exciting as it was. I remember k10k was brilliant, years ago. Also dreamless, but surfstation, three oh, DiK all just seemed to not move on, dreamless and k10k sent me to NT when they went off for a while (about 6 years ago) and now NT has become QBN.
Perhaps everyone just got busier with their own jobs and needed to pay their mortgages.- i still miss dreamless! it was great while it lasted.bigtrick
