Has anyone ever shot with the alien bees ring flash? Thinking of asking santa for one for christmas.

Actually got one a few months back, and love it- for the price, you really can't beat the power and ease of use.. I had issues with other flashes snyc-in to my D200, but this one works straightaway. (just a little hard to tape it to my holga though....)
Def put a call into Santa, its a good addition to your lighting kit--

So the Alien Bees gear is ok? Thinking about upping my order to 2x B800s, ring flash and some umbrellas/softboxes/snoot. The thing is its all 110volt so I'll have to buy a step down converter as we are 240v here. Just wondering if the gear is decent and therefor worth the extra effort.

I'm pro and use white lightnings (the metal version of alien bees, pretty much - see www.white-lightning.com). I can vouch for their awesome value - they hold up strong, have uber-fast flash duration, and are decently featured for the price. I also know a pro food photographer that is bloody good - probably the best one practicing in the us - who uses alien bees for her shoots (www.larakastner.com). can't speak about the ring light, but the company that makes them is a-okay by me.

I would agree .. the quality seems pretty good.. I have two that have lasted forever.. they are just not as hip and sexy like over priced Profoto.. I personally kind of like junky gear.. i just picked up the ugliest and scariest cast iron beauty light from the 40's at a local used photo shop..
