What are some awesome dogs that serve as great friends as well as good protection?
Been wanting a dog for years but only just now my girl and I seem to have time to raise a puppy. I know next to nothing about dogs, so explain as you would to an 8 year old please.

• you want protection? get a pit. they kill on command... and not on command.
• you want a great companion? get a chihuahua. they're lap dogs and hate everyone else, thus reducing your circle of friends to only you.looks like you need a half breed, like a Chit Bullhuahua

- The Collies are fantastic dogs so I've heard.Witt
- I got a collie in my parents home.. very smart and obedient. great friend.kodap
- Collies have a tendency to go star raving bonkers in later life. We had two when I was a kid. One had to be shot.detritus
- the one from my mom is now 5 years, its already bonkers, in a good waytank02

I'm down with a Jack Russell or a Boston Terrier. Athletic dogs that love to run and are good companions. Trained properly they can get along great with house guests. Most small dogs are very territorial of their home and bark/nip/bite at anyone they consider 'intruders' to their home. There's a ton of shit you're supposed to do to a puppy to train them to not have possession over anything. Like while you feed them as a puppy you're supposed to take the food away, touch their paws as they eat, grab some food from the dish as their eating. It's crazy what my sister did with her Boxer to train it but damn... it's the most behaved dog I've ever seen and I don't think I've ever heard it bark unless she tells it to speak.

labradors are very nie to have and easy to train. mellow and friendly and very good companions. they shed a lot of hair though.
I've only had 1 breed of dogs ever and that is a Weimaraner. I've had 3. great dogs, extremely beautiful, good companions, but a bit hard to train and a bit wild at first... However, they should have the tail snipped but i dont think you can do that anymore to any dogs....
- oh and they need a good space to run or at least run loose daily. very high energy dogs that can are mid to large size.menos

Get a Pug! They are a blast to be around, and so hilarious that any potential mugger will just laugh at them when they try and bark and lick their feet.

get a mastiff. great guard dogs and very protective of family. also, they lay around and aren't hyper little shits.
downside, they have shitpiles like horses and live like 6-8 years at most on average.

i vote for boxers,
or newfoundland dogs,
but they are massive.

Doug, if I wasn't too concerned about the protection bit (there's been a few break-ins in the area) I would love a Jack Russell. I'm just not sure how well it'd hold up in a fight with an intruder? (Think.. me vs. you for contrast)

Personally, I would never want a dog in my house that if it went beserk there wasn't a 100% chance that I could kill it quite easily, haha.

Any dog offers up a good bit of protection versus random stuff (i.e. It's easier to break into a house where no dog lives).
Around here we are big fans of the Doberman. Sweet, easily trained, a great pet/companion. Also, part of their genetic make is: Protect self, home, family.
Whatever the breed, there are lots of rescue organizations available and many are breed specific. That's a very good way to go.

Boxer, they tend to scare people by the look & bark, but are not really aggressive dogs.

- Predisposed to dislike other dogs and may be banned from dog parksflashbender

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys!!
Provided that I have proper literature and read up on how its done, could I realistically do all the training myself? Or would I need to take it to puppygarten anyway?

You can train a dog yourself. Set reasonable expectations for the both of you, read some books, and have at it. Dogs make you a better person.

here's a brief article about what you need:
http://www.gomestic.com/Pets/The…names: Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chows and German Shepards.
I find Rotties to be a bit stupid though; I would assume from the horrible breeding practices that went on during their popular stint in the late 80s and early 90s... but what do I know.
