Small, annoying thing.
I'm using Offset Path with a negative value on some forms to get an 'inner area' for each one. Trouble is, two shapes - an S and a Y, are actually EXPANDING when I apply it. I have no idea why.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any clever workarounds or Offset-Path alternatives to suggest?
I've tried making other S and Y forms and they don't have the problem - just the two I need done (which have both had Warp effects applied, as have the other, non-breaking letters, which is why I can't just use another letter s or Y).
I just don't get it.

s'ok, I've found a workaround, I was being a bit dumb (had to post a fricking topic before the penny dropped, of course).
Still, it is WRONG, the way it's doing it.
ho-hum.

my guess would be your negative offset value is too big.
an alt technique would be to use a stroke to visually achieve neg offset effect, outline stroke, a copy/paste out the inside piece.

heh, yeah - adding a 'double sized' stroke also occurred to me just after I posted.
Wood for trees, and all that.
The offset size I've used is tiny, and is working on the other, more complex forms, so must just be an Illy weirdism.
Thanks Horton, one day I won't waste your time with my stupid questions.. :)

Make sure your path is closed. If it aint, it won't work properly.

Retro - nail hit, on head - point blank. Thankyou! That was driving me potty.
Now to try and work out how the fuck two previously-closed paths opened up...
hmph.

make it a compound path.
