How can I make my external firewire HD bootable?
ie. so I can install OS X onto it...

carbon copy cloner = bootable mac os x drive

I must be missing something...
I don't want to copy what's on an existing disk onto the external, just want to make that bootable with no data on...
see what i mean?

then just install OS X onto it?
or as john suggested, use the external as a backup of your main OS X disk and clone it over.
you need to use carboncopy or superduper to ensure the system is copied over correct and bootable.

It won't let me install OS X onto it...
I've got a .DMG which I've restored onto my iPod. I can use the iPod as a startup disk, but when I do that it says I can't install onto the external drive.
It'll let me install onto any of the partitions my internal disk but I don't want to do that because it's a different version of OS X ;)
Hence needing to boot from the iPod and installing on an external drive 'cause I don't wanna mess up anything on the internal drive.

whats in the .dmg? an OS X installer or a backup?
i'm guessing you can't install OS X from a .dmg mounted on your iPod.. copy it over to your internal and try again?
- Raniator0
the .dmg is an OS X installer.
i'm going to try restoring it onto the external drive, booting from the iPod and seeing if it'll let me install onto it then...
It looks like it'll let me install OS X from the iPod, it just won't let me choose the external as a destination... yet.

oh btw is it a new external.. did you reformat? might not be formatted for mac.
erase and 1-pass zero using OS X disk utiility.

(Jul 5 07, 10:56)and might be a good idea to create a OS X partition while your at it, if your using the external for more than just a boot disk.
- Raniator0
I've reformatted etc, didn't make any difference.
Shame there isn't a 'make bootable' option. Seems obvious really...
- Raniator0
Using for 'more' than a boot disk, I can't even do that at the moment, that's the problem! :)
- Raniator0
Hmmm... thinking about it, maybe I've phrased the question wrong?
I just wanna install OS X onto my external from a .dmg... THEN it needs to be bootable...

If you do use an external as an operating system, does it use your computer your working on for the ram etc?? It confuses me!
- horton0
the OS X install makes the disk bootable. but sounds like your doing a system restore and not install. I thought you had a .dmg of an Apple OS X install disk. You need to install OS X from an installer or clone whatever your trying to restore using carboncopy etc.
not sure why the iPod is invloved.
- horton0
ah ok forgot about the restore option in disk utility.. i never use that ish.
pretty sure you gotta restore back onto the same system your fixing.. its not going to install a complete OS X on a new target.
mb carbonclone it over and then do your restore.

yeah surely just format the ext. then backup using cc or superduper and make sure the 'make bootable' tab is ticked.
then go about your business.

Ok.
I've got a .dmg of Leopard (9a466), the latest release.
I want that on my external HD.
I don't wanna fuck up my system disk.
I can't burn it to a dual-layer DVD.
I didn't want to say anything, but you've draggggged it out of me.
- de4k0
hey how's the rain there?
- Raniator0
Frustrating.
- horton0
ahh.. i never screw around with OS X betas... no time for the toying.
i know some people using it but i think they all burned to DL.
i'd try copying over and mounting off your internal first.
btw.. Apple are apparently hella aggressive... may not want to mention those build#s on teh interweb :)
- Raniator0
I think I'm gonna give up to be honest... I'll admit defeat.
I thought it would be possible, but I don't wanna risk my system disk and the data partition which is why I wanted it on the external.
Fuck it, can't be bothered...
October ain't that far away :)
