So, tomorrow we got this guy coming buy trying to sell us on a T1 line. 1.5meg each way. Its a pretty good deal, bundling phone, cell, hosting, line, etc etc. Almost what we are paying now with all services separate. We have 6 people in the office, a FTP server so clients can up/down their jobs. It doesn't get much action thought. Right now we have 5meg down and 786k up. Happy with it. Is there a reason i should get the T1? I know its a direct line and all that cool stuff, but it would be alot slower than what i have now, right?

they still do T1? I thought it was all SDSL now?

generally, a T1 will have much lower latency and much higher availability. look at your SLA for the DSL (if there even is one) and compare it to the T1.

We got just for the upload speed.. since we send so many jobs up to our FTP or to our clients FTP it made sense... if you are really getting 5 megs down, then you are probably going to be slower w/ the T1... what is your actual download speed?
- acescence0
also- if you have a business class connection, your bandwidth should be guaranteed, versus average DSL where if you read the fine print it will say they'd like to give you up to 5megs, but your actual speed will vary and, more often than not, be slower than that

thoughput and guaranteed bandwidth are why a T1 is so nice to have.
and yes, SDSL is 'teh new interwebs' name'; same thing, repackaged w/ fancy nomenclature.
i wish i still had a T1 *many* days...
- acescence0
the 'S' just means symmetric, or that the speed is same up and down
- madirish0
haha- exactly acescence.
and now that i think about it, a T1 is not even a "Direct Service Line" (DSL)- it is a Tier One line which is mathmatically, and systematically allocated more bandwidth by engineering definition. any sort of DSL line (business or otherwise) is a T2 line.... stupid ISPs trying to trich people and shite...

i have a fios line now
wouldn't trade it for anything...
t1 would be better if you need that kind of availability, but it depends on your needs
how much they go for nowadays?
still a lot?
- joyride0
yeah, if you can get fios, go for that hands down.
Do you have a problem with bandwidth now? if you don't have a problem with it, why switch if it's the same price

nah no problem with current set up, but they are offering a whole package, which includes cell phone, office phone, web hosting, and T1 for $600 month. We pay almost that for services separate (maybe a little less). we have business class dsl, and speeds are great. we do have a ftp server, but doesn't get used that much to warrant a faster upload rate. i just gotta present my case today why we shouldn't switch to a T1.
