agreed.. though it does seem a hell of a lot lighter.

tell me about it, I'll be playing for like 4 hours this weekend, so I have to cart over about 100 records to my mates house...
It'd be easier if I was a techno or house DJ where they can play a 2 hour set with like 20 records...

bah.. when i was doing chicago house in 92 it was at least a couple crates for a decent set. then again there were points when you'd never let a cut go past 2 breaks.

but yes, i suppose many centuries later it's ok to just tweak eq's and call it a night.

ableton Live mate, teh future, roll up and DJ for hours and hours with a laptop. I know the vinyl purists are all over it saying that it's a cop out but I don't know a designer who doesn't like a bit of technology. If anyone's interested I put up a mix here the other day....link:

Minimal techno and the like.
I always do the packaging for these mixes and am no happier when I'm on my mac, making a mix and designing the sleeve. Sweet.

those were different times eno. but yeah there are still guys who kick it like so, I shouldn't generalize, but you caught my drift...

Ive got ableton live but not got my head into it yet.
Is it easy to get into the mixing then?Does it just allow you to drop tracks and play them or can you chop up bits and remix AND dj at the same time?

"I know the vinyl purists are all over it saying that it's a cop out but I don't know a designer who doesn't like a bit of technology."
Well, let me introduce myself. I am a designer whom hates technology...
The first time i saw anyone perform a set off a laptop was Coldcut. I mean if i closed my eyes, I would have been really impressed, but never-the-less, I have seen other 2 man crews kill what they did, just with vinyl and maybe a DAT...
I have one live session with shadow, cut Chemist and Numark, just using 3 MPC's called 'pushin' buttons' even that was kinda lame, doing something different for the sake of doing something different...

"whom hates technology..."
technology is generally plastic crap that happens to be about 30 years behind its own marketing.
might as well stick with state of the art, even if it's merely the cure for the belt drive.
all bullshit aside, mixing on a laptop or cd rack is fine and definitely has its pros, but seems to be better suited for some back room and not center stage.
...wasn't a big fan of pushin buttons either, though shadow's live sets do tend to make my panties wet.

(Jul 13 06, 02:34)yes...it's versatile to say the least you can cut and recut and mix and remix on the fly just pratice a lot be fore you go 'LIVE' otherwise it's just very improvisatinoal.... and any vinyle purist out there should think about what a MIX really is...many with turntables and a laptop and a cd deck and ...instruments...and..,.

CDJs, serato, final scratch and all that shit are dope....but nothing compares to the analogue warmth of vinyl
i looooove having a vinyl collection. sure its magnetic media and you're basically destorying it every time you use it, but there is something so satisfying about the hiss and pop of vinyl....it just sounds so much better in a club IMO
plus for DNB, its all about dubplate culture....not sure about other genres

the digging for gems is the best part of it all. With .mp3's I have a bit of the same rush, but still not even close to the rush of crate digging through stacks and stacks of wax....

I got it bad y'all,
I got it bad y'all,
When it comes to the pen and the pad y'all!

that wax breaks ur back but cds will set u free.
I did like spinning on me ol belt driven thingamajigs though. I had to put a quarter on the cartridge to scratch.
ah the good ol days.
- neue75_bold0
taping a quarter to the needle and tennis balls cut in half under the decks...
- TenaciousG0
I do beats and dance music semi-seriously haven't decided what to do with them yet)
And vinyl isn't magnetic... the needle's signaller might be, but the record isn't...
