New research on nearly 2 million Uber drivers finds a gender earnings gap of 7% even in the complete absence of gender discrimination

    https://web.stanford.edu/~diamon…

The uniqueness of our data—knowing exactly the production and compensation functions—permits us to completely unpack the underlying determinants of the gender earnings gap.

We find that the entire gender gap is caused by three factors:

    a) experience on the platform (learning-by-doing),
    b) preferences over where/when to work, and
    c) preferences for driving speed.

This suggests that, as the gig economy grows and brings more flexibility in employment, women’s relatively high opportunity cost of non-paid-work time and gender-based preference differences can perpetuate a gender earnings gap even in the absence of discrimination.

    • TL;DR: pay gap has nothing to do with gender discrimination and everything to do with gender differences in work preferences and experienceGnash

Dearest fadein, the point is simple really, and you'd see it if your biases weren't so firmly crocheted within the taffeta folds of your virtuous self image.

Uber is not just a “taxi” company, as you so dismissively labelled them. they are a hugely successful example of a completely gender-blind labour ecosystem.

By using millions of data points the study found that a 7% pay gap between men and women persisted even within that gender-blind market.

Coincidently, this 7% is almost identical to the general labour market gender pay gap of 8% that is currently argued as being based solely on discrimination, and not on the bizarrely controversial idea that men and women are different and consequently, make different choices.

This study simply offers quite solid evidence contradicting the currently preferred opinion — specifically because of its unique ability to offer truly gender-blind data.

I truly hope, for your sake, that this isn’t a “mind-blowing post” — it’s quite a simple concept really and I feel a little silly having to break it down for you.

    • Does this study put the nail in the coffin of that argument? no, but it sheds a lot of light on the discussion.Gnash
    • but clearly a light not bright enough to illuminate the dark corners of some peoples preconceptionsGnash
    • This study is about a taxi company. See below "2 million Uber drivers". It is also about a freelance sector where the amount of work is defined byfadein11
    • the individual worker, not a salary defined by the employer. Obviously the hourly rate is but the amount of time drivers work is down to them.fadein11
    • E.g. the recent BBC pay scandal had nothing to do with choices made by the individual but about the worth defined to them by their employer.fadein11
    • Perhaps I am missing something but this doesn't relate to broader pay discrimination at all.fadein11
    • It looks like an example of someone using a study that is v.specific to make borader assumptions about an issue.fadein11
    • ugh. whizbangGnash
    • I knew there was no point in trying to explain. live and learnGnash
    • sorry? explain what?fadein11
    • look at my original comment pal, the article was obvious. wasn't sure why it was worth posting and why you felt the need to, what did it say to you?fadein11
    • Still sidestepping my original question, did it help enforce your views? or was it just a joke post from your online "persona" as set suggested?fadein11
    • If you won't be embarrassed for yourself, I'll do it for you.set
    • We both embarrass ourselves daily here, isn't that part of the fun. It's all part of our online "personas" :)fadein11
    • Gnash may have won this battle but he will not win the war! lol. Stay positive always xfadein11
    • gender pay gap in the gig economy or shall we say narrowed down example of the gig economy AKA uber drivers. hmmm. this has put the issue to bed for sure :)fadein11
    • Uber "hugely successful"? - they have only just started making a meagre profit in the US and are still losing billions globally. Sorry had to correct you there.fadein11
    • To say uber isn't successful is madness. It's a 70 billion dollar brand and is still growing... Come on fadeset

    • You're simply clutching to small and irrelevant points in order to still be 'right' after massively embarrassing yourself. Just stop.set

    • You commented again and I responded. Why don't you "Just stop"fadein11
