it is all about how you save them off from IA. removing the "Enable Illy editing?" feature is a big one.

there is a lot to play with in that window- hunt around

also check your "save as pdf" settings in illy. You might have it set pretty high there.

i replaced a bunch of pages in a huge pdf via acrobat pro with some that i had saved out of ai, and the result was huge... but then i did a save as out of acrobat to a new file and the result was small again. strange.

in Acrobat Pro > Tools > Print Production > PDF Optimizer..

its amazing how much some of those settings will reduce your file size.

The best way I found is to save your illustrator pages as eps. Then in Adobe Acrobat import them using the create pdf from multiple files and select your eps files. Should work

What madrish suggested has reduced my files size greatly in the past.

yeah -space, it attaches a whole grip of handling intructions and tool commands, ect to the file that really add up. as long as it is not important to the final doc, uncheck that sucker.

you can strip all that cross-compatibility in the PDF optimizer...

just so buddy doesn't have to resave 70 pages!

also if you've got complex vectors consider rastering them to 150 dpi or so with jpeg compression (depending on end use).. will probably save you tons.

that too is all via PDF Optimizer.

I found saving as Acrobat 6 makes a good size change, maybe because its a newer version and if its just for the web, there is an "optimize for web" check box for acrobat 6 . This is from Illy CS.
