Hi folks,
The CD tray on my 5 month-old, formerly lovely G5 has decided to permanently stay shut. Keyboard shortcut doesn't work, and I can't open it from a Firmware reboot either.
Had a look round the forums and seems to be a very common issue, very unresolved by Apple.
Anyone had similar problems?
If it wasn't Friday afternoon I'd have booted it out of the window by now ... :-)
Cheers!

call the apple store and have them replace it?

dont know if it helps, but this would happen to my PC a lot , so i opened that suker up and disconnected and reconnected the cables inside the computer , never failed again .... again PC not Mac

Called London Regent St who put me through to Apple UK Tech Support, who won't give me any unless I extend the warranty to 2 years for £199.
They said take it in to the Apple Store...
Just wondered if there were any suggestions before I took it in. Hardly easy things to lump around London or anywhere else for that matter!

try the unplug - replug thing, sounds like a good idea

have you tried microanvika? they have a few stores around central london and are decently priced. if i recall correctly, i courier'd them a g4 last spring and they were quite good.

If you slide the cover down manually you can insert a paper clip in the small hole on the left, like in the old days.

nice tip, spendogg! i never knew that.
and the number of times i ended up having to use that tactic towards the end of my g3s' lives...
it'll probably come in handy once the g5s start to go...

didn't know that the g5 had the pinhole either.. paperclips and g3/g4 is so 2000ish

this happens to me all the time- G5... they should come with a box of paper clips. ridiculous they dont have a button.

Yeah, agree with spendog. There is also a eject style button/light on the right hand side and a paperclip hoie on the left...give it a go.

Thanks everyone...
nice to see the World's Most Powerful Personal Computerâ„¢ is still no match for an unfolded paperclip.
I'll post what happens, I can't help thinking it won't be the only one to suffer.

Try restarting and hold down your mouse key. That should force it to open and see what happens then.
good luck.
