Can someone w/ experience in both of these packages explain the difference between the two.

One's an editing program (Final Cut), while Motion is a motion graphics / compositing program....
a similar parallel would be Adobe Premier vs. After Effects.

thanks, but it looked to me like you could also edit in motion (maybe limited features?). the apple store ckerk couldn't tell me either...

FCP is for editing. you can lay down video tracks and audio tracks and add transitions and cuts. You can also do simple effects by using multiple layers of video and using masks and blending modes.
Motion is made specifically for effects. you can do a million different visual effects more like after effects.
There is overlap, many thing like text and simple compositing, you can do on both. but basically, you would capture your videop with FCP then bring your clips you want to effect into motion, apply the effects and then bring all your clips back into FCP and edit it up.

Well, sure you can do basic edits in Motion or After Effects, but as a matter of workflow you wouldn't want to edit a 30min television program in either of them.
What are you hopeing to do?

Thank you, theplanet. When apple realizes I'm the real Steve Jobs and that I have been replaced by an imposter, I'll ship you a new G5.

thanks helloperson. I plan on importing video from a Canon Xl1 and then editing it as well as laying over simple effects and text for titles/credits.

Then I would go with either Final Cut or Final Cut Express.
The biggest differences between these two programs (when working with SD digital video) has been color-correction and file management. Express also has slightly less in terms of effects (and little in terms of real-time effects), but I've found it works quite well for many of the projects we've used it on at work.
